Does anyone know where I can get an early model starter motor/dyno in good shape for the Volvo Penta MD1? Has anyone tried substituting the 12 v Hitachi starter motor/generator for the Bosch unit? Advice from anyone? Jack Harkins |

What model is the Volvo Penta 6 cylinder? Do you have an OEM number for the starter? We have some starters here and on the next page. |

Did you have any success with the substitute starter motor. We have an MD1 with the same problem - in need of a new starter/generator. The genuine parts are very expensive and are looking for an alternative? |

Hi all, we have a Volvo Penta 2001 with 120S saildrive (MGC27 sailboat). The starter spins and the solenoid sounds like it is operating but the engine does not turn over. Using the hand crank (with the compression dump open), I can spin the motor freely. Is this a common problem with these starters? Has anyone substituted or repaired one of these starters / solenoids? |

Hi all, we have a Volvo Penta 2001 with 120S saildrive, which also will not start, buzzes at the starter motor or solenoid? not sure where. Trouble is its a self-made boat and access to repairs is severely limited. Any marine engineers out there in the Tyneside area? |

Ken, et al, We found two problems with our V-P 2001: #1 the solenoid mechanism was rusted and would not move when the solenoid was energized. In this case the starter motor would spin, but the gear would not be thrown into the flywheel, so the engine would not turn over. After we fixed that, we then tried to start, but we only got a buzzing noise....I though it was a bad solenoid, but turned out to be a loose negative (-) connection to the solenoid. Once corrected the engine started within 3 revs! Hope this helps... |

I am looking for an Autolite MZ4040 for my 1946 Buchanan Junior 4, or for a suitable substitute, if such a thing exists. Original was converted to 12V and now have problems with bent shaft due to stronger kick. |

hi i have just bought a plymouth pilot with volvo penta diesel 10 hp md1b believe quite old/after quarter throttle the whole boat shakes/vibration in gear and out,the engine sounds to run ok but faulters a bit when throttle opened up ? help.thankyou. |

As to the shakes and vibration first thing I would check is the engine mounts. They could be broken or loose. The MD1B engines were built from 1970 to 1973. If yours hasn't been rebuilt I would say it is long overdue for at least a topside rebuild. Do a compression test and see what you get. With that in hand the direction to proceed should be obvious. |

Hello all. Great site! I've searched high and low, with a few leads, but just curious if anyone in here has or knows where I could track down a drofin Starter Motor. I have a Drofin 15hp that is at the moment a pull start.... Any help would be great! Cheers |

Hi mygooma, I am stripping it because the big end has has fauled, the con rod dig end cap has taken a beating also. I have another engine md1b in my garage in southampton that is all good mechanically but needs a serious clean and paint, this engine ran fine before it was taken out, I am also selling this as I would prefer to install a yanmar in my westerly. Hi mygooma, I'm stripping this engine because the big end has failed and the con rod has also taken a beating. I do have an md1b in my garage in southampton that worked fine when it was pulled out, it just needs a good clean and a paint! I wish to sell this now as I am planning to install a yanmar in my westerly. |

Hi,i run twin Volvo Penta aqad40 165hp T/D with 280 legs, on bringing my boat onto my mooring my port throttle got jammed and wouldnt go into neutral or reverse + the red button { neutral } is jammed, wont engage, has anyone got any ideas, thanks Mike. |
