Wow...!!!
I "believe" that it is located in the UK, so it is probably a UK made engine (just guessing...).

Ah, yes, the unmistakeable work of Messrs. Heath-Robinson, Consulting Engineers. ;-) "I say, do you chaps think we could put a bit more brass on the engine? Brighten things up you know!"

Sorry Julia, I was trying to be funny. "Heath-Robinson" is an anglicism for "Rube Goldberg" as they say in the States: a device that is overly and uneccessarily complex or ill-designed. Perhaps it is now an obsolete anglicism?! Anyway, I would try www.semidiesel.com , the National Maritime Museum and similar sites in the UK first. This is obviously not a common engine outside the UK.

Some more info and pictures from Julia.

Hopefully one of our UK friends can help with this one... quiet an unusual engine!

... once used it as an inboard in... boat approx 30yrs ago.

Robert Bosch Flywheel Magneto um1x2 c.1920
variable pitch/feathering prop&shaft by Hamilton Gibson& Petree, Pat1911
Prop 16'' Dia, Shaft 5'0'' Length.

.... possibly a Fortis Marine Engine Manufactured by an engineering company in manchester?.

... was offered to put it in the British Science Museum as a donation but ... declined...

At least as valuable as knowing the engine maker is learning about Heath-Robinson. I will try to use it to befuddle my compatriots. Can you elaborate on its origins?

Thank you Robert for adding to the education of one of the natives in the colonies.

Hmm, not without consulting the internet first...
;-)

As for museums, 90% of them are like jackdaws: they collect everything they can get their hands on, relevant or not and then squirrel it away where it is never seen again. NEVER DONATE, unless you can use the tax receipt and don't care about the item. Loan yes, then they are accountable for what happens to the items and they can be reclaimed if not properly used or cared for. Small museums are sometimes a better bet, but they are also notorious for the theft of artifacts by staff, not to mention visitors. I heard of a case in BC where the curator's wife had an antique store... Smaller museums are also prone to suffer from rollercoaster finances and can go from wonderful to disasterous very quickly with a few staff changes. That's my $.02 as we say out here in the Colonies. Now, where the hell did I put my Valium..!
