Hi.
My name is Victor Winterthun. Norwegian.
We have a sylinder from a Palmer Bros. motor.
There is a number on it. The number is:
P1-413411.
We believe it is a 4hp, 2 stroke gas engine.
Does anybody know what the number means?. |

Could be the one.
Do you have something about the number?
This motor was probably imported to Norway before world warII, by an norwegian engineer who was sailing on American ships. The only part left now is the sylinder. |

The cylinder should look very much like the picture Andrew posted except the boss for the upper mounting for the timer would be about half way up the forward cylinder wall. The serial number 413411 means the engine was made in 1911. The 4134 means it was the 4134th Palmer Bros. made since they started using serial numbers about 1905/6. The serial number fits in the system Palmer used to identifye engines by serial number. That is it was the 4134th engine made but not 4134th P-1 made. As an engine came off the production line the serial number applied was simply the next one up with no regard to model etc.
The P-1 was rated 3.5 horsepower at 500 RPM. It swung a 16" diameter propeller. Weighed 200lbs. flywheel diameter was 15"

Victor, I publish an annual listing of known Palmer Bros. engines. There is no charge and I do not put the listing on the internet and request all others not to do so. There are too many people mining the internet looking for names and addresses for who knows what, probably bad reasons. It only goes to owners, Marine museums and Marine libraries. I would like to add your P-1 serial no. 413411 to the 2004 update. If it is going to a museum perhaps you could give me an address so the listing would show where the engine may be seen. Andrew I got a nice note and a photo from Victor by I have not yet advanced to that level of sophistication with these infernal Machines. It is on my new computer not the old one so when I get these talking to one another I will send it along. |
