In 1938 G M developed this engine for power units in 110 ft patrol boats. Several hundred were built and installed. In the Royal Norwegian Navy is a restored vessel "HITRA" which was repowered in Y2K with a pair of M-B engines replacing the GM,s I can not find any sites or info at all on these GM,s. Also Stewart&Stevenson fitted these verticle shaft engines in mobile gen-sets.Who can tell me more. Also does anyone have pics of the little 51 series GM. I believe they only came in 2 and 4 cyl. sizes. I shall send a pic of the X16 to Andrew. |

Raymond,I now have some info on the series 51 and the x16 development, and also a LARGE GM of somewhat similar arrangement.Drop me an address or I could post here if there is intrest and my skills allow. |

Somewhere I have a manual for the 51 series. I only kept it to settle arguments. I have only seen 1 and it was a 4 cylinder.
for those of you who are wondering the 51 series looked like 53 series. However they were 51 cu in per cylinder and had no valves. They had exhaust ports in the cylinder like any other 2 stroke. However like the 53's and 71's they did use a blower with a wet sump.
I will try to find the manual and scan a couple of pics. However I have moved twice since I have seen it. |

enginenut and ernie, thanks for the replies.I sure would like to see a scan and further info I too have seen only one 2-51 it was in a little tracked skid shovel.Howled like a new baby. |

Here is a bunch of info on the X type GM diesels
There are 2 of them in the submarine Albacore located in Portsmouth, NH. Well worth the stop if you are in the area. It is only a couple of miles off I 95. If you know where to look you can see it from the highway.
