I have a '52 CC Sportsman with an original K. I want to upgrade the system to 12v. I've heard that I can use the 6v starter with no problem. Can a generator be rewired for 12v? I'm trying to avoid changing out all components. Any other things that need to be addressed when making this conversion, coil, wiring, etc.? If so, parts reccomendations?

Any help or feedback would be great. Thanks!

Otter,

I'm not sure if this is what you need or not... but see Miro's previous post at this link

I put together the notes about running a 6V engine with 12V because a very good friend tried to convert a 6V genrator to 12V and while it IS POSSIBLE the results were quite unsatisfactory. The generator was rated for about 60 watts and at 6V it put out 8 A or so.
When converted to 12V it put out about 3 A just enough to run the engine and the running lights but kinda mnarginal.
Since 6V compomenets are still available at reasoable prices, I'd stick with the 6V except f or te starter . The engines start better and the arrangement is quite simple.

If you are bound and determined to make the change ( I see it as a downgrade, not an upgrade) then go ahead and you'll find that you've spent a lot of time, frustration and effort ( and money) and you don't really end up with anything better.

As I pointed out, I've used the 12V on a 6V starter for about 10 years with no problems.
