Here are comments and pics from Dick Day. Thanks Dick Enjoy them Ernie Notes on some of the photos taken at the Joe Suydam Auction 11-06-04 By R. A. Day Jr. 11/26/2004 Note most prices are approx unless a specific price is shown. In the confusion I may have made mistakes but I think I am pretty close. 0264 Lathrop 21029? Mint condition approx $1,200 0266 Lathrop " Note drag brake and magneto. 0267 Bridgeport, Excellent restoration. 0268 Bridgeport, approx $1,200 0269 Gaffga, "Long Stroke" engine, Greenport, NY. Good condition 0270 14' Long lathe. Note half nut is on rear of carriage and there is a long overhead wood pole the length of the lathe (didn't show up in photo.) this permited reversing the overhead flat belt drive for thread cutting without disengaging the half nut. Great way to get accurate threads cut on long or short pieces. Back left is the 5 hsp Fuller and Johnson which drove the flat belt equipment in the shop. Bullard, vertical turret lathe to the right. All the machine tools looked like they came out of the factory yesterday. 0275 Two pallets with large hot air engines. Approx $1,200 each. 0277 Hot air engine approx $1,200. I think the same man bought all three hot air engines. 0278 Boat with ZR-1 Palmer in it $1,800. Excellent condition. 0280 1904 Curved Dash Olds. Approx $36,000 Remarkable original condition. Probably will not be restored as it is so original and in such excellent condition. This car was Joe's transportation around his 300 acre farm until he could no longer crank it. 0286 Home morning of 7 Nov. 04 0290 Blocked up for the winter.

Rest in Peace. Great prices and great photos. How do those "drag brakes" actually go together Dick? Built from scratch I assume? |

Joe made them up from old cast iron pulleys. He had sections of oldtime brake shoe material on them. Probably asbestos and he used a wing nut as I recall to tighten them down just enough to smooth out the firing of the two stroke. Engines started by rocking and were just about as nice a set up as you could want. |
