Hi, and thanks for the great site. This is Max Herrington in Saint John, N.B. I have an Acadia make and break, 5hp, No. 49. If someone can tell me how to send you some pictures - I'll do it. They're in a folder on my computer.
A little history that might interest, or at least amuse you;
At the age of 3 months, I began sailing with my Mom, Dad and Grandfather on the, "OHYES", a 26', roundbottom motorboat.(Can send you picture of her as well, if you like.)
This boat was built in the Grand Lake area of N.B. approx. 1912. She was purchased by Grampie in 1922, and was in our family continously until 1977. Her engine was an Essex, 6 1/2 HP, make and break, built by the Phoenix Foundry on Pond Street, here in Saint John.
When just a toddler, I was lulled to sleep by the throaty putt-putt of this big one lunger as we made our way up river. This engine was replaced before I was old enough to learn how to operate it. Consumption was 1 gallon per hour and on occasion, it has run, non-stop, for five hours. (Saint John to Oromocto.)
The sight and sound of a one lunger forms a part of the very fabric of my being. Can't wait to get the Acadia running.

Max,
If you have never sent pictures by email before, you need to start by sending a regular email message to Ernie, you can click on his email address to start: [email protected]
Then you should see an icon on the top of your screen that will allow you to "attach" a file, might be a "paperclip". After you click on that you will have to browse for the photos on you computer. Select the files (photos) you want to send and then send the email. |

Thanks Bruce. In 1977, Dad was 70 and I was busy at my job and raising three kids with my wife, Nancy. Even though Nancy and I had taken the kids away a few times on the boat, it was getting pretty cramped. (Five foot headroom in main cabin and narrow six foot beam.) I was unable to give Dad a hand getting her ready for launch/haulout, so he sold her to a local retired police officer. This gentleman took good care of her until his boys grew up and they took over. I found her four years ago in a friend's boatyard - almost a derelict. To the dismay of family and friends, I brought her to my backyard with a view to restoration.(The reason I got the Acadia.) As I began to examine her more closely, it was obvious she was too far gone. I got out my pulp saw and cut her up into managable pieces, and put her out with the garbage over a couple of months.
The, "OHYES" was pretty much a two-man boat. Grampie got her as an open hull, built the cabin and installed the Essex. She was used for evenings and weekend trips, and for duckhunting in the fall. When I came along in 1942, Mom, Dad and I used her quite a bit. She was rebuilt between 1956-59 - new deadwood,garboards,shearclamp and house. The Essex was discarded and replaced with a Universal, Utility Four. She fell over during Spring freshet before completion and dad mumbled something about letting her go out with the tide. I told him I'd leave home if he did. He kept her and we had another 17 years sailing with her. |

That is a great story!
Do a search of this board for "essex" (use the search link at the top of the page) and you will find various discussions about essex engines, including one from a gentleman that was looking for one to go with the trophy his grandfather won in 1911(?) with a 5HP Essex engine! |

Hello Andrew. It's been over three years since we've communicated. I'm retired now, and have a bit more time to indulge in some of my favourite pastimes - including one-lungers. I dusted off my Acadia 5 hp. and hope to get her running sometime this year. I'm also in the process of building an 11 foot sailing tender designed by Arch Davis, called the Sand Dollar. I received a priming cup from a fellow in Ontario, and recently got the basement tided up to the point where I can work on the engine and tender with ease.
Glad to see your wedsite is still going strong and expect to be in closer contact with you and others on your site as I attempt to get my engine into operational form.
