I know I found a list of marine engine builders somewhere on the web, and I did not book mark it.

Anyone know where to find it?

We have a "partial" list here.

There are many offline resources with listing of the various US buiders: Stan Grayson's book OLD MARINE ENGINES, Max Homfeld's list, Wendels' "Big Yellow Book", Gardner Hiscox's book GAS GASOLINE AND OIL ENGINES, etc.

A note here to say that I have developed a computer program and have started the tedious job of listing Marine engine mfgrs from the 1920's and back. It encompasses all the lists and references mentioned by Andrew above, as well as other lists and resources to be somewhere in 950 to 1000 names.the system has the capacity to select specific info such as, all mfgrs in a particular state or city etc and give that list to me with the push of a button. Am also trying to input specific data of engines so that when descriptions of unknowns are typed in, it will read back all engs that may fit those similarities.A separate data base will hold known photos or illustrated ads that will help to see what the engine looked like, Similar to Wendel's,maybe a little more formal.
At this point I have listed the "A's and B'S but have the unentered lists. So If your looking into an unknown Mfgr ask on line here and I will try to answer, but Lots of time needed to research and feed all data into system !
this week I've duplicated the program to do the same with, Reverse Gears, Carburetors / mixing valves, ignitions, although that data has a lot of work to be done yet.
This will be a working list that can be added to, updated etc, as more specific or accurate info comes to light. Will post progress !!

Thanks Richard
1. Stan Grayson's books were the first step for a reference and documentation of marine engine history.
2 This site, created by Andrew, where people can share resources and info was the next step. This site can provide the venue where info is colleted and shared. Where we have the privilege of picking the brains and experience of people like Dick Day, Ernie, J.B., Bob Price, Miro, Thomas, Bruce, you and others.
3 The effort you are undertaking is the next generation, and a place for the storing and retrieval for future generations.
I complement you for undertaking this important endeavor. You are doing a great service to this hobby and marine history.

Keith

Thanks for kind words.

Other Than actually collecting or the mechanics
of running and restoring Old Marine Engines a big part of their enjoyment is learning about them. An accurate source for dating and the history that surrounds each one is the goal here !

Thanks to those who rep[lied to me, both here and privately. I was looking for information on engines built in Rochester NY.

I am planning a trip down to the city library and want something to start with. If anyone has information, or would like to chat about Rochester NY built engines, drop me a line.

I did do a small page on Rochester Gas Engine Co.

rgvrr, real interesting trolling through the old city directories there in the old Rochester library building by the river. Most say they or prohibited from being photo copied on their covers but I ignored the warning in the interest of capturing images for preservation and collection. Will be interested to see what you come up with-my time was limited during my visit.

Richard, I think Lacy marine motor Co is included in the Rochester NY list; circa 1917 in my notes......successor to Brown and Cochran of Lorain, Ohio???

Bruce
Yes Lacy Marine motor Co.is on Rochester list. There may be more yet.
I cant be accurate or complete yet because im putting together about 10- 12 lists plus my own and havent gotten that far yet. Quick notes say Lacy Bros Toledo 1904,then Rathburn Lacy Co. which sold to S.M.Jones Co. in 1908.
D.e.Lacy was involved with beginnings of Brown & Cochran of Lorain.and somehow with the Cleveland Ice machine & Mfg Co. of Lorain, they became Lacy of Rochester. I think all these co.s called their engines "Lacy"

Bruce, Richard,

This list is the same as what I came up with. I am planning a trip to the library on 11/15 to see what I can find on the Rochester Gas Engine Co and connection to JJ Leary.

Also going to look into DeLong and Elbridge. ? Is GE Delong from Elbridge the same Delong from webster ny, and when did Elbridge move

Time permitting, I will look into more.

rgvrr,Delong as I have determined started in Elbridge with the Delong engine- went to Syracuse I think breifly and then to Webster NY. I think he merged with a machine shop operation on Culver Rd( Near the Erie canal?)and there prospered as Elbridge Engines. This is from spot memory w/o notes. Please report your findings. I stopped at the Webster Historical society sometime ago but couldn't spend the time needed nor was the director available- keep us posted

My notes Show a G.Ervin DeLong starting Elbridge
ca 1907 as Elbridge Motor & Tool Co.a year later its Elbridge Engine Co., Catalog of 1910 has Culver Road address.
>
DeLong Engine Co.Was in Webster in 1913 ad and this 1914 ad ? Looks like a schebler 'H' carb like was used on motorcycles of the day ?
