here is my new palmer 25. can anyone tell me when they were made? also, does this generator look original, or is it an add on? any one have an extra shifter?

Too bad the tag is missing. It would have been on the top of the timing cover above the mag. It is an older one, going by the Snow and Nabstad reverse gear and water pump with right angle drive. I will dig up dates tonight for you. GUESSING right now years were mid 40's to late 50's. Yes the starter/generator looks origional. Andrew has manual reprints and an information book written by Dick Day. Both worth having. I would post pics of mine, however it is 100 percent apart at this time. Mine is a 1955 or mid vintage one with Paragon reverse gear and no right angle drive on the water pump, but lacking the plug in the timing cover to help with mag installation.
Yours looks to be in very good condition. Also it should have a priming cup in the head instead of the pipe plug. You also have the optional fuel pump. You don't see that often. What is the actual writing on your the top of your head? BH, BHW or BH-25?

Going to have to get Dick Day's help here. I find that the BH series were started in 1948. I can't seem to find the final production date. I am still guessing the late 50's. I also need more info to give you a good idea as to the wording on the head. Yours is an early one. Still going by the reverse gear water pump drive and lack of timing plug on the top of the timing cover.
There is a pic of an identical engine to yours, including fuel pump in Dick Day's book. It is dated circa 1948.
I just picked up the new main bearings and rear main seal for mine today. Hope to start assembling it this weekend.

Will try to add a little. I think that the switch to cubic inch displacement for the BH took place in 1953. This was about the same time they phased out the Snow and Knabstadt reverse gear for Paragon OXKB. I wonder if the generator is a 6 or twelve volt. I would think it would be twelve volt which also came with the two drive belts for a wet flywheel. Most mechanical fuel pumps were replaced with Bendix electrical fuel pumps due to the high failure rate of the mechanical pumps.When I get back on my feet I will check my 1953 BH. I think that was the year they added the pipe plug over the magneto drive gear. I think my BH has a Paragon reverse gear will have to check. |
