I have recently traded for a Koban 3HP inboard marine engine and am looking for some info on it. Does anyone have any literature showing this motor? The power head is from the Koban outboard motor but it has several features not found on that motor. There are a couple of missing parts that I am tryig to figure out. This motor also has a Dodge brothers starter / generator that was used in line with the motor. I guess you could run the boat by battery or by gas power. When running by gas power you could then charge the batteries. There is a clutch mechanism between koban and electric unit tht would allow dis engagement. Thanks for any help. Below are some pictures. Regards, Tom

Tom:A few years back I acquired this Koban inboard engine, have looked and searched for info about it. this ad is only one found so far! See below.. The hold down flanges were cast into the block, had a carburetor, and plunger water pump. Serial number 2114 is stamped on round crankshaft cover flange behind flywheel on flat part were bolts secure it to the block. first two digits are year made 1921. Seems Koban built grain binder engines with this 3 hp block in 1913, then out boards and some inboards,Co was bought by evinrude and disappeared in 1926!By the look of the hold down flanges on your engine it appears to be a converted outboard. Might require night school to learn to operate it! It's a fascinating propulsion device.hope this info helpful ! Richard |

What a beautiful little rig that is. That deserves a fine restoration and an even finer canoe to display it in. A really rare jewel IMO. Thanks for posting the photos and can we see some more, please? More Koban info: http://www.oldmarineengine.com/cgi-bin/discus/search.cgi |
