I have a 1953 Chris-Craft with a KLC 6 volt engine. I had the starter rebuilt and when I go to start the boat, it seems very, very slow to turn over. The 6 volt battery is new and it has 1,000 cold cranking amps. It is so slow to turn that I flood the engine most of the time trying to start it. It acts the same wheather it is the first time or the 5th time of the day to start the engine |

Doug, 6 volt system can be a problem ... There are several things that you need to check out on your system.
Make sure that the battery cables that you have are for a 6 volt system, it does matter. the size of the wire is bigger so to carry more amps.
Make sure that you have good a ground, star washers and anti corrsion jell may help.
And check your voltage to the coil while you are cranking the engine. Low voltage will cause you some grief.
Oh and make sure you do not have any of those phony clamps on the Battery cables you know which ones, they are the ones that are only for emergencys.
If it still cranks slow you may have a starter that has dry bearings and is dragging or a tried starter.

As has been pointed out, size of the cables from the battery to the starter is important. Can't be too large with a 6V system (think BIG). |

I am looking for starter for Perkins T6 3540 engine. Perkins part is 2873159, it is CCV 12V starter originally produced from CAV.
If anyone has information's where to find it, I'll appreciate. Thanks

Those engines sold in the usa came with delco starters.wwwValu-bilt.com has the delco ones in there book.their part number r123827 |

I have a 1953 ChrisCraft Marine straight six. It has been rebuilt with an autolite Model L6004-5E starter and Autolite Model GEO4607-3 5E generator. Can anyone verify these are 6 Volt rated. The previous owner was told the rebuilder converted the engine to a 12 Volt system, but I have been unable to find these old Autolite model numbers on line. |

John,
The starter is MCL6004. They both started life as 6V. Could be anything now. Check the coil and voltage regulator to see if they are marked. |
