I'm starting work on my K engine and found out that the original electrical system was 6V. The part numbers for the existing electrical system are: Starter:Autolite MCL6004 1K Generator:Autolite GEO 4807-3 3K Distributor: Autolite 1AY 4009 9K Coil: 12V 504 143 My question is why would the coil be labeled 12V? I hope I did the right thing by going to all the trouble to find a 6V battery. There was no battery in the boat when I got it. Regards, Mark |

Mark -while not an expert, I do have a '56 Chris w/ 2 Ks, 6 volt. My understanding is that you could use a 12 volt coil, but better to get a 6 volt. The generator will not support a 12 volt battery so stick w/ the 6. NAPA still stocks 6 volt coils; if that doesn't pan out try a tractor repair store. Also, as for the battery, make sure you use the thickest battey cable you can find. 12 volt long cables will burn out especially if the ends are not squeeky clean. Sounds like this is your 1st classic boat - think about joining the Antique and Classic Boat Society chapter nearest your location. Thanks Bruce, Gary responded to this thread on ACBS "How to" section. He thinks maybe the generator was rewound. Mark http://acbs.org/discus/ |
