Does anyone have any information on the ERD 151ci race engines? What years were they built? Listed HP? RPM? I've found one to put in my 1922 raceboat and am looking for any info out there. This one has a regular manifold as well as the dry stack castings.

Not enough info! This sounds like a very interesting project. I have an ERD 4 cylinder 2 stroke "high speed" engine built in 1910-11. It uses Holley updraft carbs. The cylinders are cast iron, however another engine collector has a later period racing Erd with copper press on water jackets. Mine is about 200 c.i. disp and puts out about 35-40 hp at about 1000 rpm or so. I didn't know Harry Erd was still in business in the 1920's. He started in business about 1908 and I haven't found any ads after 1917. I guess these guys had to find something to do after the industry shakeout of the late teens. Is your Erd is a 4 or 2 stroke. How many cylinders. Most likely is was a custom built job out of the Erd shop. I presume your raceboat is a step hydro Hacker Pelican sort of thing? A photo would help for both boat and motor.

Rgds

Nothing specific about your engine, but here is some more about the company. You might also contact the Saginaw County Historical Museum in Saginaw, MI to see if they have any later catalogs. Looks like the terminal date for the company is March 1929, just before the crash.

Sorry for the vague post. It is a 4 cylinder 4 stroke L-head. It has a Bosch magneto with dual ignition. The oil pump is external driven off the side of the cam gear. I tried to post photos but they didn't "stick" the first time. I'm new to all this board stuff and am learning. Let me know your e-mail address and I will send you photos directly.

Thanks

Thanks for the pictures. An interesting engine. Do you have any idea how the intake porting runs. I seems a little wierd to have the carb and exhaust on opposite sides of a L head engine.

Keith,

The intake is cast through the block and must have an integral intake gallery or basically the intake manifold cast in the block. Another guy told me that the early Chevrolet engines were the same layout. I'll pick the engine up next week and get into it a little more as I'm curious as hell myself. I've got feelers out all over and just hope I can turn up information on it somewhere.

I'm new to this site and just saw this post.
Believe it or not, I came to this site to try to find out how much horsepower a Twenties era 151 cu. in. race motor puts out!
I have had a copy of the MotorBoating Ideal Series Volume 9 (1927) plan book for a long time. It was given to me by my late father-in-law. I have been wanting to build the Charles Mower design 151 class hydroplane "Columbia Jr." ever since I first saw it. I just love that boat, it's a sort of baby "Baby Bootlegger".
I live very close to Clayton NY, and every other year I go to the Antique Raceboat Regatta, and I get the itch again. ITCH, ITCH, ITCH!!
Anyway, the plans specify use of either the "Special Universal" or "Erd" 151 race motor. I didn't think I would be likely to find a correct period engine for a price I could afford, so I was thinking of trying to find a near equivalent power modern engine. The boat is about 16.5', and the inimitable Mr. Mower said it should make speed of 40 mph or more so I'm thinking maybe 50 hp or so?
