I received the following correspondance from Ray Johnson in Newfoundland. Ray's email address is [email protected]

quote:

Andrew,

Thanks ever so much for responding to my request.

I must say it's wondeful to see a person such as yourself putting together a web.site in tribute to the people and the marine engine that has made someone like me realize how it important this part of my past was. As I write you these lines I can't stop thinking about my days as a boy fishing from a 28 ft trap skiff consisting of a 6.5 Atlantic Marine Engine. Based on this I was able to compose a tune entitled "Fishin In A Dory" that has become a Newfoundland hit hear in Canada.

To date I own a 22 ft. motor boat. The engine used to drive this craft is a 4-Atlantic Marine Engine built in Lunenburg, N.S. Canada. Also I have a 5-Atlantic that's in perfect condition. I hope to have this engine placed in a museum soon.

Speaking of engines, sometime ago I was in touch with Stan Grayson who wrote or compiled the book "Old Marine Engines" the World of the One-Lunger, Third Edition. Should you get a chance to view this book, you will notice a work I wrote entitled, "Fitted for the Helm."

Please take care. Thanks!

PS. Should you want to hear the recitation "Fitted for the Helm" just go into the wasisanme web.site

and

quote:

Look for the recording "100% Pure" on our web.site. If you have difficulty opening the recitation, please get back to me.
In the meantime, re: the Song, "Fishin' In A Dory" I'm afraid that's not part of the Budddy Wasisname site. Back when I was a young fellow I recorded
7 albums, one of which listed the song in question. I hope soon to do a CD consisting of 12 - 15 pieces of my favourites. Hopefully I will get one off to you.

By the way, how's my good friend Stan Grayson doing? If you get an opportunity to speak with him tell him I plan to start a Make-and-Break Marine Society sometime here in Newfoundland, Canada. Should Stan, yourself, and others be interested I would try and find ways to have you guys travel to our Island to speak to our Heritage group "Flambro Head Heritage Society"
and possibly have Heritage Canada perserve this wonderful bit of History by means of some grant money. Wouldn't it be great if such a Society or club took off world-wide.

Have you ever heard of the piece, "Make-and-Break Harbour" by Stan Rogers of Nova Scotia, Canada. Another great song. Unfortunately, Stan passed away a few years ago; nevertheless, he left us a great legacy of old songs relating to the sea.

Anyway Andrew, if you like you can paste some of the info I sent you, and just maybe, I'll get an opportunity to connect with other fine people such as yourself. Cheers! Ray

I wasn't able to find links for the sound clips
Ray refered to... if anyone find them please post a link here.

Regards, Andrew

I received another email from Ray saying that he is sending me the CD. I don't know if I can post a portion of it here as a audible file or not... I don't know how to do it, and I'm not sure it is legal to do so or not...

Seems like it will be very interesting. The was someone a few years ago that posted to the old board about music from the rhythm of machinery... I can't remember who it was though.

Here are Ray's comments:

quote:

Hi Andrew,

Sometime soon you should receive the CD I spoke to you earlierabout. "100% Pure" is a recording about rural Newfoundland, Canada. The two pieces I want you to refer to are "Make & Break Hornpipe and "Fitted For The Helm."
The first piece is a tune I composed that deals with the rhythm/movement of the 6-Atlantic Marine Engine used in a 28 ft. Trap Skiff. Note the sound of the drummers beat. I wanted the listenerner to visualize the primeing-cup set up.

With regards to the second piece, this is referred to as a recitation, the story about a master boat builder, and the parts of that boat.

Ray also had a question about an igniter on an Atlantic engine. I will post it in the Atlantic section.
