I have a palmer p-60 in my 1972 30 ft. Sailboat. It started and ran fine for the last four years. It has become very hard if not impossible to start. I have replaced the spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condensor and fuel filter with no change. I cleaned the spark arrester and the choke is working. It appears to flood almost instantly. If I can get it to start it will stay running but will not rev over 1500 rpm in forward gear. It will rev to 2500 in neutral. Fuel use seems to have doubled. Can anyone offer things to check or adjust? |

Captain, Coils are rarely a problem and I usually advise people to get the rest of the ignition up to snuff before replacing the coil even if you are getting coil symptoms. You've done that so now you should replace the coil. Also some rare coil symtoms, if they don't give out completely, are hard starting and misfire at higher rpm. Be sure you use a coil that doses not need external ballast. Eddie |

Thanks for the quick reply. I will dig out my spare coil and give it a try. |

Captain, Genesee Products make conversion kits for industrial engines. You will want the Prestolite/Autolite one. Palmer owners who have used them are doing well with them. It will not however perform any better than a well maintained point system. Eddie |

Seems to me there is a carburetor problem. Dirt on the float valve seat? Any leakage out of the throat into the bilge? The flooding aspect worries me. |

Thanks again for the quick replies. It will be a few days before I get to the boat to try some of the ideas. The apparent flooding is minor, no fuel leaks from the carb or lines just when I pull the choke on the engine makes to attempt to fire. If I leave the choke off it tries to fire on a couple cylinders kicks out the starter and dies. With the choke on about 1/3rd with 1/4 throttle is the only time I have been able to get it to start and stay running. I will try the coil first and then start looking closer at the carb. |

The RPMs don't sound too bad to me, depending on your prop and alot of other factors. My M-60 pushes my @13,000# Morgan 35 at better than 7 kts at 1500RPM. Also, have you checked your timing? |
