When the word was that Mystic wasn't going to have an engine show this year. I got to thinking about where we could hold a show that would be near a lot of old marine engine people.

I contacted the secretary of the Antique & Classic Boat Asscociation in New Jersey and asked if they would be interested in having an antique marine engine show concurrently with their Barnagat Bay show in September.

In a short phrase, YES. The have a Wooden Boat Festival in Tom's River, NJ in July and an ACBS show at Barnagat Bay in September. Chet Ehrman, Barnagat Bay Secretary and I have talked about either venue being suitable. They would welcome our marine engines, suggested that they even would want to judge them if we so desired and in general, thought that it was a good match of interests.

Your comments, suggestions, criticisms etc. are earnestly solicited.

Great idea, however there is alot going on in Sept. There are several gas engine shows that have been scheduled for years on the same dates. I hope there is a weekend left. I have the 2002 show guide if you need existing dates, just send me an e-mail.
As to judging........ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG what a great way to ruin a fun hobby. We must remember that there are many skill levels and budgets out there.
How do you explain to someone that their pet 3 stroke unrestored bilge fresh one half of a kind just didn't make it? Or the senior gent that has all he can handle with a US motors Briggs aircooled marine?
Lets keep this hobby fun and not ruin it like the old car hobby. The prices for our old junk have already gotten to the point that it's hard for a new comer to get started. Lets not put up another roadblock.

Thanks for the comments Ernie and I agree that judging would not be a good thing. I only mentioned it to find out other's thoughts on the subject. Engines are most definately not cars or boats.

As for the dates, remember, this started 'cause Mystic wasn't going to happen and I thought that we needed to establish an alternative just for marine engines.

Bob,
I think that is great!
I can give you names of some New Jersey collectors who have marine engines. Some of them are involved with the ACBS, but most are not... and may or may not hear about it. It would probably be a good idea to contact them early and try to get them on board. If you can get a good local attendance then there will be a good base. Unfortunately September and October are big months for engine shows in New Jersey.
Regards,
Andrew

Bob,
What is the possible date in Sept?
Hoping it's an empty one.

As you'd probably predict, the Sept 14 date conflicts with the Noth American 3 Cylinder Club meet. That event isn't strictly engines but does draw engine folks who have operating boats. I am plannng to take my Dis Pro to the NA3CC event. But since I'm planning to visit the Calvert show - I'll have my fix for the year.

Well folks, like Miro, I am also committed to the NA3CC outing in Canada on 14 September. My original post was predicated on the notion that there was not going to be a Mystic show.

That said, could you plse comment on whether or not a show in the mid-Atlantic region would be of some interest. Particularly if we could sell and swap too. The ACBS folks seemed genuinely interested in having old engines amongst the old boats. I will let the ACBS folks know accordingly.

Thanks

Bob Price
