I received a call from Eugene Mitchell of New Brunswick who is doing some family research. He is 83 years old and he has a silver cup from a boatrace that his grandfather won in 1908. It is first place:

1908 Fisherman's Race
St. Stevens New Brunswick
5hp Essex engine single cylinder

It was in a boat that his grandfather built. He would like to find more information on the engine.

He does use email, [email protected] and he also left his phone number 506-755-2206. I have sent him the link to this post and told him to check here for the next week or two.

Tom Stranko posted in April 2002 (has this board been around that long...?)
"ESSEX one cyl make&break " manuf by James Fleming, St. John, NB, est. 1835"

Larry Healy posted a picture in November 2002:

A search on this board of "essex" reveals the previous posts.

Goodday Andrew I now own the pictured engine--& would be pleased to answer any questions about if I can--I traded with Tom on the Dunn engine he now has & we never got any history with the Essex. "All the best" Larry Healey

Larry,

What horsepower is it?

Is there any other info on the nameplate?

I think that Mr. Mitchell would like other pictures of it if possible.

Thanks.

Larry and all,
The Essex came from an antique engine collector
in the state of Maine. He was located way up there, almost to the top of the state (I'll have to look up the details of who it was and maybe we can get more information)
I had made an agreement with him to buy the Essex and pick it up on my way back from a training session I was attending in Mass. (this was in December of about 1988).
He called me the week before the trip to ask if I wanted to "resell" the engine because he had another collector at his house who really wanted the engine. I didn't just say no, I said Hell no!
I would be up to collect it as agreed.
(Don't forget to call me Larry, if you ever get tired of looking at it!!)
Tom

The Essex came to me in November of 1986 from
Joe Lockhart of Easton Maine.

Hello. This is Max Herrington in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Please see my post under "Acadia", specifically "Acadia 5-hp". I grew up with an Essex 6 1/5 hp. I can research the library and museum here for more information if that would be helpful.

Max,

Any information about the Essex Company, or any photos of their engines would be greatly appreciated.

Richard
