Here is a picture of a small tender designed by Weston Farmer for use with a small inboard. This boat was built with a "modern" diesel, but thought I would post it because it is the sort of boat that might appeal to someone looking for something to build for their small inboard. We sell the plans for it here. Here is a link to more pictures of Irreducible supplied by Brad Shipp. Regards, Andrew

I was wondering out of interest what sort of diesel motor is in this boat above (the incredable 10ft launch) Paul Ford 234 Merri St Warrnambool 3280 Ph 0418 261 969 |

Paul- Right now Irreducible has a Farymann (sp?) 3 horse diesel hand crank air cooled engine. It powers a hydraulic drive system, which in turn spins the prop shaft. The cool part is that there isnt any transmission to speak of -- the hydraulics take care of it all. Unfortunately there are a few problems with the setup... first, many of the engine parts have started to rust, which leads me to believe it might not have been a marine engine to begin with. second, the think shakes and rattles so much that you feel like your teeth are going to fall out. third, the engine is loud as hell. We're seriously considering repowering her with the Elco electric drive units that are available now. We'd swap out the diesel engine and the hydraulic system and replace it with like a 1 or 1/2 hp motor drive. Gives you about 10 hrs at like 4 knots, and charges overnight. Looks like a very cool system. Don;t think I would use it on an old boat, but since Irreducible is new we think this solution might be a nice blend of classic design with modern technology. It would have the added benefit of being able to power a bilge pump, which is a big issue for us right now. The engine is mounted so close to the water that if the boat gets more than a few inches in her the engine starts to sit in water. Usually it's rainwater (fresh) but still... that can't be a good thing. And of course we would be able to resuse the through-hull where the exhaust pipe is now! There are more pictures of Irreducible, including some video clips, at www.weathergage.com and just follow the links to Irreducible. (There are some other cool boats on the site, too.) Brad. Your "Irreducible" looks great. Good Job of building. I have a 3 HP Arcadia Gas Engine I would like to put in something. Not being a boat builder I'm hesitant to try a lap stake construction. Is the process difficult? Bending ribs seems complicated; are the plans detailed enough for a beginner? Good wood is had to find in my area. Oak is next to impossible to obtain. Any comment would be appreciated. |
