I have a Palmer p-60 in my sail boat. The engine runs fine, have done some things to it and worked on marine motors and others a lot. I need to know about an oil pressure relieve valve or adjustment. I've installed new gauge and meter, but still have what I consider low pressure. 20 lbs\psi at cold start, under 5 while running warm. I've heard a couple of differnt locations but never can't do anything. Thanks Jon [email protected] |

Get the IHC CUB Lo-Boy tractor C-60 engine manual. Try VALU-BILT tractor parts 888-828-3276 or www.valu-bilt.com Not the CUB Cadet that is a different engine. My son has my copy so I cannot help at the moment. Could also be worn crank journal bearings. Screw a mechanical pressure gauge into the 1/8th inch NPT on the forward face of the oil filter housing to get a measurment without the electrical system involved. |

If the oil preasure relief is ajusted too low you will have low oil preasure all the time,not just when hot.I don't think thats your problem.It could be a worn engine,but the big problem thats been turning up is the new oil filters let too much oil through them.Guys who have good oil preasure are changeing the oil and filter and looseing 10 to 12 pounds of oil preasure. |

Relief valve is non-adjustable. The valve is located in side of crankcase, just below base for distributor drive housing. My own P-60 shows 25-30 psi on gage at half speed or better. The engine uses an oil filter element not a spin-on. I have tried filter elements from Fram, Wix, Napa, and Baldwin. None have made any difference in oil pressure. Fram seemed to be the meatiest. Napa the lightest. Eddie |

Mostly from my supply of old books,plus a newer champion catologe.Allso throw in a brillman sales sheet.People are allways asking for a good web-site to look up old plugs.I DON'T have that. |

Just purchased a 1973 Islander with the P-60 engine. I have no info on this engine, could you reccomend a good owner's manual or repair manual for this engine. Also need to change oil, what is the filter # and brand. I have the cartridge type. Thanks. Bob |

I just rebuilt my P-60 and I don't have any oil presure. The oil filter appears dry, I don't think any oil is getting pumped this far. The oil presure releif holding spring (2.91 inches) had a drop of gritty rust on it. The hole it fits into (3 inches deep) feels mostly dry. There appears to a cuff with a dimple (scalloped indent) at the base of this channel. With a metal rod probe I think I feel holes in the channel, top and bottom. I can not push the cuff further in, nor does running the engine push it further out. How can I remove this unit? Any advice on inspecting and cleaning the pressure relief valve? |

Ran the engine breifly. Air exhausts out of the presure releif valve (with the plug bolt and spring removed). Presure feels about the same as at the dipstick (crankcase vents here). I believe this confirms my suspicion that I can feel a hole in the shaft (towards the outside of the collared insert). Since the spring seems about the same size if not smaller than the shaft, I don't think it is compressing anything. Am I missing part of the valve assembly? Rechecked compression. When the head was first torqued down, compression values were uniform at 125 Psi and plugs were new. After running about 3hrs values are as follows: 4 80 Psi Heavy carbon deposits, dry 3 100 Psi 15% free of deposits, dry 2 105 Psi uniform carbon deposit, oily 1 90 Psi completely black, shiny porcelain core There were issues with 1 and 4, when the plug wires fell off and the engine ran rough or would not run over 800 when warm. (perhaps carbon deposits fouled the valve seats). |
