Isn't that an old outboard without the transom bracket and straight shafting. Ernie knows what it is...

I do not believe this is a outboard. Look at the cooling inlet and outlet. one is over the other.
It looks alittle like a Caille Liberty single, but it isnt. Im also not convinced its a Gray
is there a tag on the engine????????

Good Morning Scott - well the mystery is solved, mostly. The engine is a Caille Liberty outboard motor with a non-standard flywheel and missing its drive shaft. The hinged assembly at the bottom of the motor and the crankcase that is split vertically are two for sure signs. I have a Caille catalog and there is a picture of the engine on page 30. The catalog is dated 1919 so the engine could be from 1917 to about 1925. The original flywheel was much smaller and was a simple disc with a smooth, rounded edge. Another indication that it is an outboard is that there is no water pump on the engine. The pump on the outboard was located at the end of the prop shaft which, of course, was under water.
