Hiya! Im with Kloners Supply, trying to rid myself of these Grey Marine Engines. We've been in business for 30+ years, and have just accessed the Web not long ago. So here I am with so many resources, and I come across this site!! GREAT! Maybe I'll find some people interested in taking these Grey Marine Diesel Engines from me. They WERE in perfect condition, but over the years no one has bought any, so they weathered down a bit. They're good engines, you can have one running in two hours time, or you can use them for Restoring...it's in your hands. Digital Pictures ARE available if requested, you wont be dissapointed. Quantity discounts are available also. Hope to hear from you soon. Dear people I am on a loss, so I hope for answers here. I have a Detroit Diesel, named Grey Marine 671. Looking at the block, it clearly is a 671, but the number stamped in the block does not agree with any of the serial/model numbers from the manual. My neighbor also has a GM 671, but its build is quite different. I add some pics and hope for recognition. I once heard that also models have been build in the Soviet republic. The last pic contains the number that is stamped on the location where usually the model/serial numbers are stamped, but it is different from what the manual tells me there should be. Any help is much appreciated. I need to replace my transmission, and without the proper info on engine type, I can't do much. Best regards Adrian Boon (from Amsterdam, The Netherlands) |

Detroit serial numbers changed over the years, Gray Marine blocks are indeed labeled as being a 671 at least the ones I have worked on have been Instead of the later nomenclature of 6A or even later being 106 on the first digits. Right after the 671 should be letters L or R and then A, B, C, or D for rotation and block configuration. Not to clear in your pictures but I am going to guess that you have an RC, right hand rotation looking at the front of the engine (clockwise) and the blower is on the Port side of the engine. You'll certainly have fun with this in getting parts as the dealers will indeed ask for the block number and then tell you that it cannot be right. Also they did not use 671 for the model number but something like 64-HN9 or other variants. I've even had arguments over the later 6A nomenclature. What transmission is on it now the original crash box style? Are you trying to change out to the same or a different transmission? I have and original manual and parts book and the part numbers can be crossed to later GM part numbers. Cheers Nobby |

You have a 6-71 RC Engine and there is normally the Model and Serial Number stamped into the Machined Surface on the top of the Block, front or back, opposite corners. The model number will tell me if you have a 2/Valve or 4/Valve Head and a Late Style High, or Low Block Engine. |

Dear Nobby and Jimmys, Thank you very much for your answers. Great info. So I have to look at the top of the block, and not at the side (where it usually is, there the number just says 6/71/4320). About the transmission, there is no mark or model/serial number on the outside of the cover. However, the US patent number on the cover (1571210) from 1926 led me to a design by JD Mooney who worked for Auto Engine Works aka The Capitol. It is a mechanical 1:1 reverse gear, but I don't know where it was build. I have a technical drawing that says Hudson Invader. But this was a car factory wasn't it? On the inside of the cover there is a number with a symbol in front of it. It is an H with a triangle above and a circle below the horizontal bar of the H, and then G1108-B. I posted pictures of the transmission on my public Flickr site (https://secure.flickr.com/photos/95966913@N07/sets/72157646297264514/). It can probably be repared, I am looking for a company able to do that. If not, I need to replace it. Your welcome to share your ideas about the transmission here (althought it's a bit off topic?). |

Arjen,.. After seeing your pictures better, I see that you have a Pre-War 1939-1940 6-71 Grey Marine Diesel Engine with I believe to be with the Mechanical Capital Marine Gear. The 6-71 Cylinder Head has been changed to the Later Style, Non External Fuel Rail Head and you have the Battle Speed Optional Governor, they used on the Landing Craft 6-71 Grey Marine 6-71's..An Option for you would be go to the X8708A Twin Disk Mechanical 1.5 to 1 Ratio Gear Box, which was on the Landing Craft 6-71's. A further option, would be go to a newer Hydraulic Twin Disc Gear Box and I have three available on eBay Listing #'s 380967503904, 380967503904 & 380958761783. |

Depending on what parts you need you could also try the following aftermarket specialist for Capitol/Auto Engine Works units. http://capitolmarinegear.com/ Out of interest what is wrong with your current transmission. I also concur with Jimmys comment that you have a later head. Cheers Nobby |

Nobby and Jimmys, thanks again for your answers. A pre-war 671 from a landing craft would make sense. A lot of these LC were left in Europe after WWII. Maybe even the transmission (Hudson Invader) is that old. I did send an email to Capitolmarinegear about my transmission, but they did not answer yet. Gear shifting hardly works anymore, my wife could not handle the gear anymore,I was the only one strong enough to shift from forward to reverse and back again. A hydraulic, clockwise gear (1:1) would be ideal. SInce I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, I will have to look around locally (Belgium, Germany, NL) for gears. Again, thanks for the info. |

I mean no vertical offset, gear reduction 1:1 is not the issue. I would not like to lift my engine. Jimmys, what would transport of one of your transmissions to Europe cost like? |

To ship one of my Marine transmissions to Europe would probably be around $ 2000.00 US,..But that's a guess...England and France had allot of the Landing Craft Engines left over from the War and especially the Spare Parts. They could have have the Mechanical 1.5 to 1 Ratio X8708A Marine Transmissions, like I mentioned before,..That would keep your trans Mechanical like the original ones in the Landing Crafts. I have one in pieces, but the Shifting Plates and Gears are pretty rusty. Not a good one to rebuild or reassemble.I will look for one here and let you know....Going to a Hydraulic Marine Trans is best, but you need a Hydraulic Pump also. The first and older Detroit Diesel/GM Allison Hydraulic Marine Transmissions come in the 1.5 to 1 Ratio also, but most of them are the 2 to 1 ratio. |

I am currently checking Velvet Drives and Twin discs. Especially the Velvet drives seem relatively light yet trustworhty gears. |

The Velvet Drive/Borg Warner Marine gears are good but a little lite duty for your 6-71's. I have a 2.10 to 1 Ratio Velvet Drive Gear Box on eBay. |

I just bought a boat with a 60's vintage Gray Marine 671 with an Oliver Marine Reverse gear model X8087-B I'd like to know a little more about it, I have a hard time finding neutral with it. What gears out there are hydraulic and match up with this engine? Eventually I'd like to replace with something easier to handle. |

Your 6-71 Grey Marine WW11 Engines, came with the Twin Disc Mechanical Marine Gear,..X8708A-B & C,..depending on the gear ratio,..1.5 to 1, or 2 to 1, or the 3 to 1 Ratios....A good Replacement Marine would be the Twin Disc MG 509 Hydraulic Marine Gear, or the Allison MH Gear....You would need to get/change out the Flywheel and the Flywheel Housing to the #2 SAE Size and get the Drive Ring (Spider Gear) for the Twin Disc MG509. |
