Greetings, all. In about 1939 my grandfather upgraded our family's Fay & Bowen motorlaunch to a four-cylinder Gray Marine engine. It's been running fine over the decades but we recently had some engine work done and have reason to believe the Bendix drive on the Auto-Lite MZ4045 starter may not have been reassembled correctly.

Can someone. please help with this? No parts seem damaged and the starter cranks fine, but the Bendix gear always seems meshed with the flywheel gear (i.e. does not retract). What order and orientation should these be? Any missing parts?

Many thanks!

You can start by knowing what direction the engine rotates.

The starter should rotate in the opposite direction, i.e. the small gear (part 4).
Before attempting to start this gear should be pushed by the spring so that it does not engage the flywheel.
The starting action rotates part 5 which is nested with part 4 and pulls part 4 forward, and the teeth of part 4 engage the flywheel .

When the engine fires the flywheel teeth spin the small gear (part 4) and the thread ( a really coarse thread) of part 5 pushes the small gear back, thus disengaging it.

Parts 4 and 5 should move freely on the shaft and with each other.
