I have a 1974 Ericson sailboat with a Palmer P60 engine. I've seen 2 different spark plug recommendations, Champion D16 or Champion D15Y. Which is the hotter plug (heat range)? Also what is the recommended gap for these plugs? Thanks. Steve |

The D16 is hotter. My book shows the D15y as the recomended plug. The Y makes it an extended core plug.My guess is they used the standard plug first, then when a special plug was made they figured a slightly colder plug would work with the extended tip. There is not much differance in the two plugs. |

Bill, I get them all the time from a discount auto store. They don't keep them in stock but they order them and I get them in 2 days. They are 7/8" industrial plugs. Autolite 3116 work equally well and cost much less but the metal base is not corrosion resistant like the Champions. Eddie |

Bill, PLEASE! Don't tell me you went into these places and said they were for a Palmer. Eddie |

On a box of Autolite 3116 plugs it said something about 7/8" . Maybe they were refering to the spark plug socket. Anyway the 7/8" socket works well for installing the plugs. I've had excellent performance from both Autolite 3116 and Champion D15Y. Eddie |

Bill, Went by the auto parts store and asked about the Champion D15Y. They said that they could not order them anymore. They still were able to get Autolite 3116 which is what I've been using for several years. Eddie |

Eddie, Regarding where to get the the Champion D15Y plugs. I get Champion D15Y spark plugs from Torresen Marine in Muskegon Michigan. They usually have them in stock when I need them. They told me I could order them over the internet from their on-line store. I've never done that. Their number is 231-759-8596. Greg Heath |

I GET MY PLUGS FROM A IH FARM STORE. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE YOU CAN GET A ROTOR FOR A P 60 OR HAS ANYONE CONVERTED TO ELECTRONIC IGNITION? |

You can get rotor # AL150 and dist. cap #Al-134 from any good auto parts store. Some even have them in stock but you probably have to order them. Genesee offers a conversion kit for elecronic conversion. Look for Autolite/Prestolite one. Several P-60 owners are very happy with the conversion Eddie |

Greetings; Im new to the board. I have a P-60 in my Herreshoff Harbor Pilot. Runs fine but time for tune up. I went to get a dist. cap based on info from the board at NAPA. They told me the al-134 was a rotor and the al-133 is the cap. Then they showed it to me in the book. I had to order I hope I did the right thing. Any comments welcome. By the way I have many original manuals and info that came with the boat when I bought it as well as a letter from Mr. Herreshoff explaining the design of the Harbor Pilot. If anyone gets stuck for info about the engine or adjustments I will be happy to post it or send a copy. (so long as there are not to many requests) One last question. When I start the engine and run it, If I have to increase my RPM's quickly, the engine stalls like its choking itself out. Could this be timing? Any thoughts would be appreciated. |

Peter, welcome. Here are the ign part #s cap AL-134 rotor AL-150 conden AL111 points AL4556XP Any auto parts store can gret them under different brands with the same part number. I had good luck dealing with Car Quest Auto Parts. Usually they don't have them in stock and they have to order them. Change cap and rotor every year. |

It sounds like a carburetor adjustment to me. If the engine bogs, then quits, I'd guess the mixture is too rich. I'd try leaning out the main jet a bit. If it was me, I'd turn the main jet all the way in and count the turns, so that I could get back to where I started. The instructions in the manual (I don't have them in front of me) are a good place to start, assuming that your carb doesn't need a cleaning or rebuild. Just remember that turning the main jet in leans the engine, and turning the idle jet out leans the engine. Rich |

Hello, I just bought an old Vintage Cat sailboat with a Palmer P60. I want to replace the spark plugs, but can't seem to find the gap recommendations. I bought the Autolite 3116 plugs. Anyone have that info to share? Thanks! |

Here is what I found somewhere online... sorry I cannot properly credit the original source but I used this info and it seems to have worked fine for me... I have used the Autolie 3116 plugs for about 4 years. "Firing order is 1,3,4,2. Point gap is .018 to .020 Spark advance is automatic in the distributor." |

Chip, I think MLennarz was looking for the spark plug gap; I believe what you referenced was the gap for the contact points in the distributor. As I recall, the spark plug gap I've used was .035". MLennarz, I also have a Vintage Cat. I'm guessing you bought your boat from a Mr. Murray. That boat and mine are the only two Vintage Cats I know of at this point. |

Hello, I purchased the Autolite 3116 plugs at an Advance Auto Parts store. They had them in stock, but I bought the last 6 - - they said they could order more. Yes, I think there has been some confusion in the term "gap" - - so far all references appear to be to the distributor gap. For the spark plugs, I used a .30 gap, and the motor runs soothly. If anyone has any other recommendations, please let us know. David - - Yes, I bought my VintageCat from Larry Murray last fall - he mentioned your boat. I moved mine to Canandaigua Lake this spring and have been happily sailing (and motoring with the P60!). I would love to chat more with you on your experience with your catboat. If OK, I would like to email you at your posted email address, ok? |

I'll look forward to hearing from you off the board. We Vintage Catters need to stick together; there aren't many of us! David |
