I'm restoring a 1961 Dowty Turbojet and it's got a Gray Marine 109 in it. Things have been going well and I've got the engine running (pretty smoothly for the state it was in) but my oil pressure isn't registering so I'm poking around at that. It could be for lots of reasons and I'm working through various tests.
However the thing that has me a bit confused is how much oil I should be putting into this engine. The service manual(s) that I look at say 9qts which is about 8.5L. However the engine has a dipstick on it and after about 3.5/4L I am sitting right between the markers on the dipstick.
I'm wondering if my oil pressure might be related to a lack of oil, but by the same token I've added two extra liters (now well over the top mark of the dipstick) and I'm finding the start up a bit sluggish.
Happy to hear what others know about this.

The level on the dipstick and the amount of oil are only sort of related.
The engine has a transmission which shares the oil with the engine, so there's a lot of oil in the case, not just the engine.
I'd call someone like Jeff Titsall an experienced engine mechanic - ex-Parry Automotive. Yu can get his contact info from the ACBS Toronto Chapter web site-I think he's still one of the Directors |
