Hi Gang�long time reader�first time poster. My Century with a Gray 109 has been in storage for 8 years. Never had any issues starting her in the past. I�m having hard time getting her started again. Here�s everything I�ve done�curious what I�m forgeting? - Drained old fuel from entire system (fuel tank, fuel pump + sediment bowl, Zenith carb, fuel filter). I had Sta-Bil in the system and fogged the cylinders before putting it into storage. - New distributor cap and rotor - New spark plugs - Tested coil with multi-meter (proper resistance at coils and tower) Motor turns over. Sputtered for a fraction of a second when I blasted starting fluid into the carb. I have new points and condenser but have not yet installed. I was thinking of testing for spark at the plugs and running a compression test next but I don�t know what #�s I�m looking for. Thanks to everyone in advance! |

Running a spark test is the easiest thing to do and will let you know if your sputter was just one cylinder firing and the others are out. If you put a new distributor cap/rotor on, did you change the timing at all (did you move the distributor)? That might account for getting a hit some of the time but not often enough to fire. If you take the fuel line off before the carb and run it through, do you get fuel pumping out the line? If so then that's good. If not, then your fuel filter/pump might need to be looked at. Thomas |

Thank you, everyone. I didn�t bump the distributor that I�m aware of�great point. I�ll be aware of this one in the future. I replaced the condenser and points this morning and set the gap. I have great spark at the points but none of my plugs lit up from the spark plug testing tool i picked up at Harbor Freight. I retested the coil this time going from the negative terminal to the cable running out of the tower. I received different results when testing the tower directly so I�m wondering if that cable is defective or reducing resistance leaving the distributor to the spark plugs. |
