Good Morning All, I have decided to bring the Tugboat to the Calvert Engine Show. It's about a 2200 mile trip, so we're going to get started on April 14, 2004 from Houma, LA. We should arrive in Solomons Island on Friday, April 30. For those that don't know, I bought a Atlas Imperial 6 cylinder, 400 Hp Direct reversing enigine with floating shed 18 months ago. www.ghcoates.com/tugboat.htm With the help of MANY people, the tug is ready to travel. Will see you there, George Coates |

Good Luck George, We will make sure there is a space for the "shed" in the middle of the parking area right next to where Dave Reed was last year. Looking forward to a great treat. Dick Day |

George, What is the draft and cruise speed of the " John Arthur" ? Interested in your navigation route. Will you go the southern route around Florida or the cross state Okeechobee Waterway?? Have brought six and seven foot draft vessels across the waterway recently, stirred a little mud in a few spots, ten feet is max draft. |

Thanks for the luck and I am excited to say the least to see you all there... Draft is 6ft and change (depending on fuel), and cruise is about 9 mph. We will go through the middle of Florida. George |

I called the Coates on their cell this am. All is well- they are in Mississippi and have been on the water a couple days. The mighty Atlas is performing AOK and they are making 8-9 knots. They will be reporting in on this board soon. Good luck gentlemen!! |

4/17- I am reporting in for the John Arthur. The Coates have passed Panama City FL and are heading to the St. Lucie Canal. Trip has been uneventul except for a couple of bumps on the bottom in 2 spots. The dolphins seem to like the John Arthur. They have been constant companions- certainly a good omen! Even have seen a manatee. George Sr keeps tabs on the mighty Atlas down below- she has been performing like a pro. Air starting tank pressure only drops 10 psi overnight and most of the crew and Capt George sleep on the boat. Linda Coates is running parallel on shore arranging dockage and hotel rooms. Geo Sr now does a every 2 hr check on the engine to keep it oiled and look for leaks/ hot spots. They expect to be on the eastern coast of FL in 2 days. The tug has hot water and refrig/freezer to keep the crew happy. |

4/20- The John Aurthur is 50 miles outside of Tampa as of 8 am. George hopes to be in Ft. Meyers by this evening. His mom and brother will depart at Tampa. They made it across the open water of the gulf last night. Some 5' swells at times but then cleared out and calm. The Atlas seems to like the 50/50 mix of #2 and #3 diesel. They will get fuel soon for the trip across canal. |

Saturday- Just spoke with George. They have been stuck in St Lucie on the bottom in shallow water for last 2 days; just got a tow off. Looks like they will not make Calvert.... They made it through canal AOK and ran argound just under i95 bridge...shoot. Luckily, knock on wood, the Atlas is still kicking strong. |

Our family saw the John Arthur as it passed our home on the Bay la Launch (Orange Beach, AL)stretch of the ICW April 16 late afternoon. Have enjoyed your website with your log of restoring her to working order. We would be interested in knowing more about the tug's origins. She looks a lot like the ones our grandfather designed/built along the Louisiana/Texas Gulf Coast (Lake Charles & Port Arthur). Sorry y'all ran aground en route to the east coast. Will look forward to seeing more about your adventure online. Katie Aiken |

Sorry to hear you all won't be able to be with us on the weekend. I am glad to find out that you won't be able to come as tomorrow I was planning to dig out the large Hettinger cylinder I wanted to give Dave. Will let it go for now and perhaps we can connect up at Tuckahoe or later. Sorry George and the John Arthur won't be able to attend the show. I know it must be a big disapointment for George. |

Hello All, Just a quick note to say that the John Arthur is moving again and we spent the night in Thunderbolt, GA last night. We have had a hard time getting through FL. There's just no water in the ditch... We will make Charleston tonight. Thanks for all the support. Hope Calvert show goes well. If someone would be kind enough to forward some pictures, I'd appriciate it. As it is now we will tie up the John Arthur in Rock Hall on Friday for a few days. Will be home and compiling pictures soon. George Coates |

A well deserved congratulations to George and all his crew. A monumental trip one for the history books for those that collect and restore antiwue Marine engines. Now George you should think about bringing it to the Mystic Show in August. |

Yup and I know first hand that is is an easy trip. (compared to what you just did) From Mystic to Delaware City is only about 60 hours at 6 knots. I have done the trip several times. Sure would like to see the John Arthur at Mystic. Glad your to hear you arrived home safely Ernie |
