I got the following note from John Greenup:
Quote:I have a Gray Sea Scout made by Gray Marine. It is a Model S-S S/N 61655. the block s/n is stamped 302289ZXB. It has a Wico Series C magneto which is early. It does not look like a Sea Scout 91. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks, John greenup

Serial number makes it a 1936 model- search some old power boating magazines that era for some ads. |

ZXB's are very small 4 cylinder engines and are rated 15hp in garden tractors.I have a service manuel (condensed) that covers them. They have poured babbit rod bearings. |

thanks for your help... I suspect it is a Sea Scout 45 a.k.a. Hercules ZXB. Does anyone know what years these were made? Were many made? John greenup [email protected] |

I was told by a marine engine rebuilder company that my Gray Sea Scout was a 91 CU with 25 HP @ 2000 RPM. That was just over the phone after I told them it was a Gray Sea Scout. They said there was only one model ever made of the Sea Scout and that was it. They probably got that info from a parts book since it probably only showed one 91 CU model. After reading this thread, I think mine may be a Gray Sea Scout 45. A previous owner included a Hercules ZX manual along with the Gray Marine manuals so that also points toward the 45. It is Model S - S with Engine No. 61493. The block number is 303763ZXB. It also has another number on a small plate on the transmission case just above the prop shaft that is S-101-A. This engine is in a Coronado 27 sailboat and wasn't original to the boat. Did anyone find out more about this engine? Did anyone find parts for it? thanks |

I have a Gray Sea Scout in a Bristol 29 sailboat. Can't get the motor to run. Cleaned the Carb, Zenith 61, engine started and ran fine. Shut it down for an hour and best it will do is 800 rpm at full throttle. Cleaned Carb again replaced needle value and seat and still only 800 at full throttle. What else should I be doing? |

Those zenith carbs have a habit of collecting water around the main jet makeing the engine run rough and not able to picup speed. You can remove an ajustable jet needle and blow it out useing that hole. The real cure is to clean your tank and get a good filter. Try dry gas or a simmilar product. |

We decided that perhaps the timing was the problem. In the process of checking that we discovered that two of the spark plugs were bad. We replaced those and the engine would not start at all. Next discoverd that two of the spark plug wires where in the wrong place on the distributor cap. Somehow the engine was running on two cylinders and when we replaced the plugs all cylinders were firing, but at the wrong time and it would not start. After correcting the wires, the engine fired up and ran beautifully. We speculate that when the engine was pulled in the boat yard to replace cutlas bearing that the wires somehow got switched. |

RE: Gray Marine 4-91 Sea Scout. I think it is a 1942. Look around on the internet as Gray Marine published a 9 page letter in 1964 detailing years, serial numbers, etc. Jim |
