Anyone know who made this engine? I�d think it�d have a little age on it with the spherical valve chest. The way the one side of the main bearing slides into the side of the engine is also kind of different. The only stampings on it is �578�stamped onto the exhaust valve guide & �575� stamped into the connecting rod.
It�s missing its flywheel, its crank case cover plates, & ignition wipe but the ignition lobe is there. It�s also missing its carburetion. Most the engine is nickle-plated all over but someone painted over it with the black & gold paint.
I�m pretty sure it�s a marine engine since the cast base it sits on is at a slight downward angle. Van Duzen (Dirigo) engines sold in Maine are different but have a similar style sloped crankcase/cylinder casting. Any clues who made it are appreciated; I�d like to get it back to original if possible.

No idea - but that sure is cute. Likely had a very heavy, small diameter flywheel.

Thanks Blair & I�ll make sure to pattern the flywheel a smaller diameter.
Something else unusual about the engine is that there is no cooling on the cylinder. No water jacket around it. The spherical valve chest is the only thing cooled & it has water inlet & outlet holes on each side of it. The domed head is not cooled, only the valve chest.
Early Regan marine engines & Thomas Kane engines used spherical valve chests with separate water lines for them, but the rest the engines were a lot different than this marine.
There were some uncooled engines that were made over the years, & some Secor oil engines had uncooled cylinders. I haven�t found any matches to this engine though.

Some early marine engines built in New York only had cooling on their heads without cooling around their cylinders.
