The model of the engine or a pic will help to get you the correct answer. However off the top of my head I suspect there was no tach option. Hope this helps Ernie |

The tachometer connections are usually on the back of the generator or on the back of the water pump. However, most of these smaller 4 cylinder engines did not have the tachometer connection. In any case, you'd have to find a mechanical tachometer and a matching drive cable that would fit. I honestly think you'd be better off getting an electronic tach - if you're really lucky your engine has been converted to 12 V system - if not, it's pretty straight forward to do that. Miro |

Thank you for the input. The motor has the original 6v positive ground system. I have an original Kermath instrument panel with matching gauges... including the mechanical tach that I would like to use and keep period correct. I had not thought of running off the back of the generator...great idea. I am in need of the matching drive cable and some connector to the generator...not exactly sure what i'd be looking for ...anybody have a pic that would help my understanding? Thank you for your suggestions. |

The idea is sort of like a speedometer cable from a 1930's or 1940' car. I suspect that the marine engine and boat makers did not specify something exotic or special - they typically used what they could get easily ( and cheaply) . You might consider looking for a cable from a stationary engine that had a tachmeter. Maybe some of the classic or brass car guys might have suggestions for a cable. It usually comes with the connections at the cable ends.So then the challenge is to machine a fitting to match that cable end - not difficult. Miro |

Post a pic of the back of the tach. I bet it is the same as just about any speedometer up till the point of electronic speedos in the late late 80s to early 90s. If that is the case you can use the speedo cable from just about any GM product to include the speedo driven gear assembley out to the transmission. (rear wheel dirve) Then all you have to do is make the speedo transmission driven gear adaptor mate to the back of the generator or what ever you choose do drive it from. Even make it so it runs from a wheel running on the back of the generator belt. That way you can change the size of that wheel to correct for tach inaccuracy. Or you can take your tach to a junkyard that has older cars and find a speedo cable that will fit it. I am thinking GM since they used a threaded connection on the speedo and the transmission. I have a few small Kermath engines as well as a lot of brochures, diagrams, parts lists etc for the Sea Pup, Sea Twin, Sea Cub, Buchanan Midget and some non-marine engines based on the Herc ZX block. Generators and starters were an option for the Sea Pup and Sea Twin. There is nothing in the information I have that suggests there was a tach option or means of hooking one up. Gens and starters for these units are very uncommon as well. I don't find a provision for a tach drive on the Sea Pup, Sea Twin or Sea Cub that I have. The Kermath High Speed Sea Jeep has a tach drive fitting on one side of the transmission bellhousing, the Sea Wolf has a tach drive off the overhead cam. Perhaps a electronic tach would be a alternative to consider. |

Thank you Brownboat for your expertise! Certainly, the need for a tach is purely "just because." I was able to find alnice Kermath instrument panel (RPM, Oil Pressure, Amps), and I think it would look great on the boat...preferably in 100% working order. Seems doable based on some of the comments. Sorry, but I do not have a pic of the back of the generator...yet. Maybe I can get it soon. |

Your Tach looks like a standard threaded automotive speedometer cable fitting. Maybe SAE to include mechanical tachs too. Hope this helps Ernie |

A Ford tractor generator from 65-74? had a tach drive, cost about $100. I think 3000, 4000, 5000 models. been a whole lifetime ago. George |

That is also the standard older generation marine tach back end (Stewart Warner). I have a number of tachs like that. |

The drive is 3/16" square. Might be hard to find...plus couple it with a tach gear drive?? |
