Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later - we all get trouble with our joints.
About a week ago, it was a nice late summer day, and I planned to go cruising in the DisPro.
I paddled out in reverse, gave the recoil starter a pull, the engine started nicely, but there was no forward motion - oh, oh - not good.
After some 35 years the flexible joint has finally rusted and failed.
Worse yet, the outfit that manufactured the flex joints ( Gray and Prior Co, New Jersey) closed their doors in October 2016.
So - what to do ? ?
I recalled that I had a couple of used joints mainly because I was interested in the shaft - not the joints. But my frugal nature has come to the rescue. I was able to re-use on of the joints from my "cultch pile".
So, now I'm getting the DisPro back into operation, just in time for winter close up.

I see that Belden Universal Joints advertises that they manufacture replacements for discontinued Gray and Prior joints |

I have asked them about the joint, but so far no response.
Yesterday the shaft / joint was assembled and installed in the boat. - went for a 'shake-down " cruise and everything seems OK.
We're having glorious autumn weather here and cruising is great.

It looks like that original one gave you good service and owed you nothing more. Glad you had a spare! |
