The Champion marine engines were built in Newfoundland during 1919. I've not seen a marine Champion engine yet but I was contacted by someone claiming to own a Champion and its serial number on the name tag is No.1.
Are there any vintage ads out there depicting the Champion? Better yet, any pictures of an actual Champion?
When/if I get pictures of Champion No.1 I will post them here.

Here are 2 ads from January 1919 found in the St. John's Daily Star. Sounded like the name "Champion Machine & Motor Works" was first used in January 1919.

In my opinion, some of the claims made in the second ad were not true as no factory had been built in January 1919.

As I am not an expert in marine engines, I don't know if the Champion as unique features only found on this make OR if you guys think it is just a re-badged engine from some other engine builder?

Blair, I do not have a close-up of the tag but I have requested one. The Champion is in Newfoundland and for sale. I've never been to Newfoundland before and it would cost a lot just for the FERRY. Plus I might be sea sick on the ferry for 12 hours.

I didn't realize it was still in Newfoundland. Nice pic of it. What part of Newfoundland? I picked up a Knox in St Mary's Bay last year. |

Tom, the CHAMPION is actually near St. John's. Can you tell me how it works to travel on a ferry, in the ocean for such a long trip? Is it very expensive?

Year-round vehicle and passenger ferry service is provided by Marine Atlantic between North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. Crossing time is 6 hours. (This ferry connects with the trans-island bus service operated by DRL Coach Lines.) About 9 hour drive to St. John's.
From mid-June to mid-September, an additional ferry operates between North Sydney and Argentia in eastern Newfoundland, which are 45 kilometres from Route 1 and 131 kilometres from the provincial capital of St. John's. Crossing time is 12-14 hours. About 2 hour drive to St. John's

1918 & 1919
William H.and Cecil Trask made them, they were the Son's of Foundry owner L.M.Trask.

This 1919 ad is the only info in my files.
They were entered 15 yrs ago and I have not researched "Champion" since.
if you search there was another Champion marine engine made in late 1890's in Chicago that may pop up ??
This info says that Champion made oil engines and that the smaller engine like yours were dual fuel--Gas & Kerosene ??
Definitely more old marine engine history to discover about this maker ??

Thank you Richard. I was told that the engine was found in the basement by the new owner of the house. When he inquired about it, he was told that the gentleman that owned the house had the engine checked and new babbit prior to stowage. It is still free and seems to be missing only the carb. Going have to check on the magneto warranty  |
