This was a bit of work - I had this lovely cypress plank - 16 ft , clear, x 1 x 13. But I needed to get the seat to curve to match the sides of the boat. Each seat is 8 ft ( approx) I took a bunch of measurements, plotted the curve on the plank, made sure that each edge was very very straight, cut the plotted curve, used biscuits to align the straight edges and voila, a curved plank. Next was the real work part - flattening and cleaning up the rough sawn lumber. I started with a scrub plane with a camber of about 10 - 15 thou on the edge of the blade. The used a long jointer plane to hit all the high spots. I left a few of the ripples on the surface so that who ever gets the boat next will know the seats were planed by hand. miro The next step is turning 14 support spindles and getting them positioned under the seats to support my rather bulky body. |

Here are pictures of the seats installed in the boat. Progress includes installed decking fore and aft - all except for 2 pieces the decking is all original - but I used stainless fasteners not the iron used in the original. next step is the 5 in high coaming all around the boat _ I left that to last since it would have made getting in and out of the boat in the shop even more challenging Relaunching in a couple of weeks I hope. Looks good. WRT decks. What will you do there? Stain? or no? I will be facing the same thing with my boat. Cheers! |

Here's the next to last step for the re-build - the original coaming now installed - the 100 year old oak needed lots of clamps and a few choice words to get wrestled into place. The last step is the original half round oak trim and then varnish varnish and varnish. Miro

Yes I DID stain them with a dark walnut stain -it was the only way to get a more or less uniform colour. I found that the old oak and the old cherry wood were markedly different on how they looked with just a coat of varnish - I didn't like it - so stain. Brushed it on heavy waited about 5 minutes and wiped most of it off but adjusted the wiping to get uniformity. Some of the old wood ( 100 years) was like a sponge soaking up the stain , other pieces not very much. I did it 3 times so far to get 'er looking good. Miro Hope tis helps. |

Thanks Miro. and yes, that helps. I'm in the same situation WRT wood. I figured the only thing for it would be to stain it. I'm a little ways away from doing that, but at least now I have your input. Your boat looks great BTW. Cheers! |
