Miro. What did you use for interior and exterior paint? Cheers! |

The interior was several coats of high gloss Tremclad rust paint. The exterior is marine grade Petit high gloss paint usually used on boat decks. No "bottom" marine paint was available when I was doing it. Three coats of green below water line - 2 coats of white above water line. The hull was sealed inside and outside with Smith's penetrating thin epoxy and the outside of the hull was sheathed with a layer of glass / epoxy. Using Smith's sealer was the best thing for the boat. miro |

Thanks Miro. I am a fair ways from applying paint to the Gidley. I am trying to balance off what would be correct for the period, and what would be practical. Although no longer available, lead based paint would be correct for the period. Epoxy and glass would not. Whereas the boat will be launched and recovered as opposed to moored, stored indoors, and maintained each winter, I am wondering if I could get away with simply using the highest quality oil based exterior paint I can find? Right now the boat is overall duck egg blue/green. When I removed the fuel tank in the bow I found the original colour to be an orange-ish brown. Again, in trying to balance things off, I think this one will come down to what colours it wore for most of its life. Although the orange-ish brown is correct, it is pretty ugly by today's standard. Again, thanks for your input. BTW I enjoyed your article on cork floats. Cheers! |

Spring, Im not an expert, but I believe the inside of the hulls on your vintage boat were painted with a lead based paint. The color was an orange/red. |

Keith. You are correct. In the bow, behind the fuel tank, below the motor mount, and high up in the stern I was able to find traces of the original orange colour. |
