Hello, I was wondering if anyone here was familiar with the innards of the VP monoshift gearbox:
Suddenly, on our new-to-us boat, I can't engage drive.
I got the engine (VP MD2B) started for the first time in maybe two years and the gearchancge was very stiff, but I gently freed it off and then it was working off nicely. It has now had nearly two weeks idleness and I can't get it into gear - way stiffer than it was before.

I could see the prop shaft taking up the drive when I pushed the gear button in, and the prop shaft tried to creep round but didn't quite.
I then checked the oil & it was low - just on the dipstick so I sucked this out & replaced it. The shaft stopped trying to creep round then.

The gear cable is good & free.

I can turn the prop shaft by hand

The actuator arm will only move by tapping it with a hammer and that hasn't freed it off.

Can anyone advise or give me any leads as to what may have happened and more importantly how to resolve?

Problem solved. I'm posting this, as it could be the cause of other gear change or selection problems.
The actuator 'pivot rod' had seized in its housing.
With the gearbox on the bench, I undid the 4 set screws holding the actuator assembly. I think these are 10mm diameter when new-mine were corroded and needed a range of tools to remove. I replaced them with M6 x 20 high tensile bright plated steel set screws.
I dismantled the actuator assembly (align the retaining pin holes with the housing & drift the pin out. I used a pop rivet shaft as a drift, then gently knocked the pivot from the housing. I cleaned it and the bore with wire wool then greased & reassembled it and it's action is now slick.
You could do this without removing the gearbox if you can get the 4 retaining screws out.
BTW, drain the engine oil before disconnecting the gearbox...
