Can you help us figure out where this engine fits into the Gray lineage? Water pump on the rear and the water outlets under the upper mounting post for the ignition. The flywheel seems small for the size of engine, but it does have a thick, heavy rim.

Maybe newer, or earlier since yours doesn't use the Gray check valve.
Richard your thoughts please?

Here is Harry Mathews 6HP Gray. It has a gear water pump but has the threaded crankcase for a screw in check valve.

I have always wondered if somewhere in the past someone put the flywheel on the other end from where Gray put it.

Thanks Ernie. That's getting real close.

I see what you mean about Harry's engine. Seems to be a very long chunk of crankshaft sticking out beyond the flywheel.

Gray marketed their first marine engine in 1906, it was designed and mfgd By Dubrie Engine Co. of Detroit, this eng was only sold by Gray in the year 1906.

1907 Gray marketed their first designed and mfgd marine eng a one piece cyl & upper crankcase casting with an aft plunger water pump. This is the eng on Harry Mathews site, an odd ball that appeared to have the crankshaft in backwards, a few of these exist and some photos on this site yrs ago, but no one knew what they were ?? it was only sold in the year 1907

1908 Gray marketed their second designed marine engs the model R & S, these were the same engs the S had a plate above the output shaft to mount a mechanical oiler, they were a two piece casting the cyl was flange bolted to upper crankcase these were tough old work horses.

The Eng under discussion here { first photos on this post) is a model U and first marketed in 1912, it is a one piece cyl & upper crankcase casting, by 1916 water pumps were aft, 1918 inspection covers were round these engs were made until 1927 when Gray discontinued making two cycle marine engines, this eng would date 1918 to 1927, the serial number is probably faintly struck in the face of the outer flywheel ring ??

Great info as always, Richard. I'll take another look for a serial number. Are there any better photos of a 1907 Gray showing what mixer should be on it?
Thanks again,
Blair

probably no recognizable serial number on the flywheel (that would have been on a U engine which was stated by error)

But look under exhaust for a 3 digit number

gexno

This is info and catalog never published before very interesting and has a better pic of carb.

Took another quick look for a serial number with no luck. I'll have to take a longer look when it's not so frigid. Thanks again.
