I've recently come into the possession of a working 3 Hp Mianus in a dory converted to inboard power. I have been able to get the engine to run, but I do have a few questions. What type of grease should be used in the main crank grease cups? The timer adjustment lever, if it is to the right is that fully retarded timing? And to the left or handle facing toward the flywheel is that fully advanced? I'd post a picture but am not sure how. I have read the tips section but I think these items are not specifically discussed in that document. although the tips document in conjunction with the engine manual have been really very helpful. Than you, Bill |

Ernie, I emailed you some pictures, I'm wondering if maybe you did not receive the email? Have another question if this finds you. I can take it offline via email. Kind regards Bill |

Bill, Use plain old everyday wheel bearing grease in the grease cups for the main bearings Hope this helps Ernie |

Bill, not sure about the timing on your engine but you can figure it out. Move the lever all the way one way, rotate the engine, note the location of the flywheel key when the ignitor trips. Move the lever to the other extreme and try it again, noting the key, you should be able to tell which is advanced. To reverse these engines you should be able to advance timing all the way, kill the ignition, connect ignition when it's about to stop, high timing should reverse it. |

Sorry, I've been away a bit with other projects in the way of this one. I appreciate the feedback from those above regarding the boat and correct materials.... I will post some more pictures and report back once I have a new float from Otto and get this project moving forward more. Bill |

All, I just wanted to post a slight update and ask a question. I was able to get the Mianus running rather well last year, the project has been on hold since and i am back at it this winter. i have new rub rails for the boat and making some floorboards. she will get a paint job in the spring. i just need to rig up a fuel system and steering for the boat. i am planning on running a dry stack exhaust and was wondering what if anything anyone uses or recommends for this and a muffler? alternatively id consider a wet exhaust but would need to figure how to pump cooling water for the exhaust since the engine is configured for keel cooling jacket water. id like to keep it simple, but also avoid too much noise. With a dry exhaust, you'll have a really really hot pipe sticking out somewhere. Many of the Louisiana bateaux use dry exhaust but they are much larger boats than yours an thus have more space. And no question - direct dry exhaust is NOISY. Most of the guys in LA use small car mufflers. It takes the "bark" out of the exhaust, but it still gets hot. Cooling the exhaust is probably easier than you think it is - doesn't need much water to cool it and quieten it. A small friction drive gear water pump off the flywheel could do the trick Something like the gear pump off a Gray engine would be more than enough. |
