While I've never gotten into marine engines, I've always assumed multi-cyl development was considerably ahead of automotive...recently found: Jan 1910 trade journal announcements of a new Buffalo V8... May 1908 squib thaat John Kowalski building a 40-footer, powered by an 8 cyl 6x6, presumably his own... What do the old marine engine history books give as the first US marine V8s/straight 8s?? Many thxx for any comments. |

* Bud Not sure that the first 8 or V/8 marine eng info is available in the few publications on marine engs ! its a rather specific detail I,m sure that is arguable among the many. if technical history books were in data base form and that specific info was entered it would be a fairly simple task to sort out, I don't know if any exist ? I have probably 10 or more listings in my data base, but in the early days I was concerned with names of Marine Engine Manufacturers and only started the detailed info much later. so a lot to yet discover and record ! I was on this page when I read your post-- 1915 I have seen the Buffalo ad, I'll post it when I can find it . * |

Richard: As usual, the font of all wisdom on marine engines... Many thxx!!! Will dig around in Sterling history... Oddly enough, I'd also just run across an announcement of a Sterling Light Car engine in both OHV (model 8, unit power plant) and L-hd (model 11, engine only) versions... A 23/4 x 4 4Cyl inline,it's in the Carette journal, Nov 1914 pg---oops---not all page #s copied, but it's between pgs 24 and 45 somewhere, probably text as my note says some specs included. 1913-14 period was the heyday of the Cyclecars, and in-between types called Light Cars... |

Gave up on this; ran out of time... Did run down at least one of Craigs "8s"---was two fours attached inline... At least one of Godshalks "8s" turned out to be two fours in tandem... Sterlings claim is probably to the first series production 8s; reportedly estab 1903, in Feb 03 H E L Trebert & Co were advertising 2, 4, 6 and 8 cyl verticals,,, I'm assuming Treberts 8s were custon orders, as several of the period engine builders ads say "larger sizes made to order", or some such... I did find a Buffalo ad that referred to their V8 under high speed engines, but made no real effort to find if it ever got into series producton... |
