There's a scraping/rattling sound from the transmission (straight 1:1 drive) of my 1946 Chrysler Royal M8. It is only present in forward gear. I've removed the tranny, cleaned it out, replaced two bearings and put it back together but the sound is still there. If I clamp down the break band really hard I can make it go away but that's not a solution, the band is supposed to be loose in fwd gear. There is a mark in the aft end of the housing that I don't understand where it comes from. There is about a finger widths distance between the drum and housing where the mark is.
Any ideas on what this could be and how I can fix it? |

At all RPMs, as soon as I engage the fwd gear the sound appears. I've disconnected the prop shaft so there's no load. |

Funky noises usually go away as RPM rises. Should be gone by 1000 |

Hmmm, .... I agree, 'funky'. Those mechanical reverse gears can be a bit rattly at idle, but usually quiet right out with a bump of the throttle.
Or at least that is the case with my pair of '57 Crown M47's. |

Thanks for feedback. I'm putting the gear back on the engine this weekend. Will try revving up and see what happens. |

Ok so I was out this weekend and it seems the sound does go away at higher rpms (1000-1500). I've been working with the gear settings and it also seems like the break band is not causing the noise, which was my original theory.
I should have measured the clutch plates for even thickness when I had them out, maybe they're unevenly worn. The drum moves slightly (up to 0.005" up, dn, sideways) when I engage the fwd gear and I suspect this could be due to the clutch plates. I guess this could cause the planetary gears to rattle a bit at idle?
Is it possible to find new or NOS parts for these gears? |
