Making progress. Next step: Water Pump. Slow drip when motor is not running. Light spray when motor is running. Thinking I probably need to pull the pump to rebuild or replace. As you can see from the images attached, the mounting bolts are pretty badly corroded. Any advice as to how to best address this situation? If/when I remove the pump will I likely get a flood of oil from the motor through the hole where the pump is mounted? Any other tips? Interesting how the flash caught the water drop falling from the pump but the shutter speed made it look like a sparking flash.

You won't lose any oil when you pull the pump. Rebuilds for the sherwoods are hard to come by. You may need to source the bearings and seals from a shop. Impeller is still found but shafts are not. you may need to have one machined. Dont let that scare you it is not too expensive, may be worth having a few made. |

Just got done inspecting my sherwood pump, looks like the key broke off. Anyone know what material or replacement? |

What broke, the key or the shaft or the pulley? Keys are standard sizes, Imperial or Metric and should be easy to find. |

it was the woodruff key that broke, is it just carbon steel? |

Tim, If you put a magnet on it and it picks it up, it is carbon steel. If the magnet does not pick it up, then it is stainless steel. I don't think carbon steel would survive in this environment. David Grosse David's Yacht Service |

Hello David, We have chatted before on old marine engines palmer site. I have 2 Sherwood e20 pumps that I would like to rebuild and have as spares. I have a local shop to make shafts but would need seals and bearings. Do you have these available? I have found the major rebuild online but over 200.00 seems a bit excessive. I do have new impellers already. Currently I am running Don Moyer's pump with a custom shaft and adapter plate. Thanks for any help. Sent from my sailboat Kevin Stone 802 245 8041 [email protected] |
