I am thinking of converting my 109 with a generator on it to an alternator. Has anyone done this? Would like some advice on how to do it. Parts to buy, things to consider, etc. |

The GM Delco alternators are a one terminal alternator i.e. the regulator is built into the thing.
Also, it doesn't matter what the direction of rotation it has.
Further, most boats don't need the capacity of a car , for example, when cruising, you are basically drawing the ignition power and maybe some guages.
I did a conversion some years ago using a small Honda Civic alternator - had more than enough power for the boat's needs.
You'll see the ammeter go to about 30 Amps just after you start but within about a minute, you'll be down to about 2-3 Amps. I used the old wires and they seemed to be OK for the load. But if yours are frayed , it's cheap to replace them.
You'll want to make sure that the ignition switch OFF means OFF for everything.
Now some folks will tell you that an automotive alternator is not fit for marine use - that was not my experience. Mind you my engine was in an old wooden boat so maybe that would be OK.
I suspect that spark suppression may be an issue so just make sure you vent the engine compartment of gasoline fumes before you hit the starter.

It reminded me that most of the work on my conversion was fussing with the mechanical arrangement, not the electrical stuff.
I used the same Vee belt and generator pulley on the alternator shaft but I had to machine an adapter for it
