Trade Journals 1903 and 04 mentioned a new 4 Cyl vertical from W Hoffman Mtr Wks, Chicago (aka Hoffman Mtr Wks) a builder of Motorcycles, exhibited by Alexander & Crouch... Desc as 16HP, 4x5, water cooled; might be 2 cycle as their 2Cyl was 2 cycle...and as suitable for 1500-2500 lb car or a light launch... The Mtr Wks was listed under gasoline auto and marine engine, as well as motorcycles, in trade pub buyers guides... Some Googling doesn't bring up much, but there is a 1922 newspaper ad in which someone wants to trade one for a saxaphone.. Does the 4Cyl appear in any of the marine engine history books?? Any comments appreciated... |
