I don't believe that the first image has anything to do with Hicks engines... that Hicks was James L. Hicks... with no presence in LA afaik... |

Interesting, but the double doors and much wider frontage in the second photo suggest either a different location or a major renovation. The double doors would make more sense for moving large objects through. |

The SF library has old business directories on line going way back (predecessor to the Yellow Pages)... I found James L Hicks in SF as early as 1862: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1031989-Saw-a-Monterey-Clipper-to day%21/page31#post37371732 Frank appears in later listings, as a machinist/foreman/superintendent at James L Hicks... so "son" makes sense. And putting "Since 1860" on the storefront shows continuity from dad to son. |
