I installed a Delco dynastart on a simplex single cylinder marine engine recently. It starts the boat well but does not charge. I measured 4 volts recently so have pulled it down to have a good look inside. I've given it a general cleanup but didn't find much wrong. There is a small carbon plug that fits neatly and loosely into the end of the armature. What is it for? It has worn so that it sits about 1mm down into the armature.
Also what is the shiny circular cap for inside the end plate? I suspect it has something to do with a oil reservoir for the bush. But how do you get oil into it?
The armature is hollow right through so I suppose it could be oiled from the pulley end but that seems unlikely.

If it starts the engine I think it should produce electricity, sounds like a regulator problem. That is an oil reservoir, oil before assembly, should hold enough oil years of service. |

I don't know if it matters, but I measured the voltage at the dynastart - so before the regulator. The regulator is new, although could still be faulty I suppose.
Any idea on the small carbon 'plug' in the photo? It fits very neatly into the end of the armature. |

It's been a long time since I've had to work on generators, I believe the Delco is an A type field winding, this means you have to ground the field wire to full field it. Remove the field wire from the regulator and ground it, see if the voltage rises, should get max output. |

The attached is the wiring diagram I used. I have wired it as shown except omitted the small grey wires on the solenoid - I just use the push button. So just run the wire from F on the dynastart to ground instead of the regulator?

I filled the reservoir with oil and re-assembled. The little carbon plug went back into the end of the armature - maybe it just stops too much oil from flowing away?!
I ran the engine briefly as there was no water plumbed in and was getting about 7 amps.
So maybe all it needed was the armature cleaned - cos that's about all it got.
I'll take the boat out in the next couple of weeks for a decent run and hopefully all will be well.

Sounds like it's OK, starter-generators are a compromise between a poor starter and a poor generator. |
