Would appreciate any information on the possible manufacturer of this engine.
I bought it a couple of years ago, in pieces, and just now have got it together.
I initially figured it was either a model engine, or made to run some small setup of some kind.
It's 14" tall, solid flywheel 8 1/2".
After looking at it pretty closely, though, it shows signs of being actually worked pretty extensively in it's day.
No markings I can find, but there are two rivets on the top of the head that probably held a brass tag in place.

An old marine engine looks to be late 1890's
If you send me a good set of photos , ample size
all 4 sides focused and full engine shots, I'll post them here and research it. Would like to put a name on this one.

Another guess ... the round crankcase might be an Iowa Marine Engine. |

I sold an engine like this at Mystic I was told it was a school project looks like the same engine if not their is moor than one? |

Engineville's guess is a good one, I considered the Iowa for a closer look-- the pedestal base and round shaped crankcase get you interested but closer look the Iowa pedestal based engs had an external fuel pipe, and close look at the cylinder and crankshaft flanges reveal a different casting design.

I appreciate all the effort and resources being tapped to ID the engine.
Scott, when I read your post, I remembered what the seller said about maybe the engine was a project? He may have been the one to buy it from you. He's a great guy that lives up in Ohio on the lake.
In looking it over closely, everything on it looks quite old, and factory done- with the exception of the piston. That's the reason I took it home.
As I told Richard in a pm, the piston looks newer. It is cast, and 2.5" diameter, abt. 3" long.
The deflector may have been added, but if so, VERY skillfully done.
Today looked it over with a magnifying glass for marks, and only came up with a flywheel mark, and possible letter beside it, and, of course several places where my imagination saw remnants of letters/numbers. The flywheel mark looks to me like whats left of a spoked flywheel, with the letter "O", or "C" cast beside it.

Scott, thanks for the photos. It's definitely the very same engine.
I initially had it running for a brief time,but couldn't get it to idle.
One ring turned out to have a small piece missing, where it was notched for the pin, and the needle valve was just about eaten away on the end.
I made a new brass needle for it, and just waiting on new rings to get it back together.
The old rings mic out to be the same as a Maytag 92. Look forward to playing with some more once it's up and running.

Glad you are getting it running I only got her to pop a couple of times never disassembled it.
I found it at a swap meet in Coldchester CT. |
