JB has set me straight about rings and lubrication and I am now looking forward to the daunting task of putting it all back together. As my photo shows, I have two separate blocks and with the pistons inserted the combined weight is over 120 pounds. I can see disaster looming as try to connect it to the crank and then lower the whole thing onto the base to sit snugly over the numerous bolt holes and into the three bearings. Do all you veterans out there have a foolproof procedure to address this challenge of reassemly thus avoiding the disaster I forsee?

Eric, an engine hoist would help to lower the cylinder to the base, if not available you could do it with a rope sling from the ceiling. Be sure your crank is fitted properly, test assemble it without the pistons. It may be possible to install the pistons from the head after the cylinders are on, the hinged rods may allow this. If you must lower the assembly make some dowel bolts, cut the head off of a long bolt, screw it in to the base and place the gaskets over them, it will help guide the cylinder in to place.

JB Thanks for the tips on assembly. The idea of dowels or headless long bolts as guides makes sense. You say "it may be possible to install the pistons from the head"; in fact on this engine it is the only way it can be done. The top of the cylinder provides a nice clean edge to catch the ring compressor as the pistons are eased down the bore. But these blocks were cast in such a way that there is no clean edge at the bottom end of the bore. As to your suggestion about installing the the pistons after the cylinders are on: am I right in thinking that the only way I could do that is by making the connection between the conrods and the crank through the inspection ports at the bottom of the blocks? But I am not sure that that is possible on this engine. So the merrygoround continues to whirl. Thanks again. E.
