I am trying to identify a Gray Marine Flat 4 engine that is in a Mid 1950's Correct Craft Atom. On the casting of the block I found a casting date of 4-7-54 below the number "F4120". Also on the block I found the following along the bottom edge of the casting; F400A4. On the Head between plugs 3 and 4 I found the number F400A, and then above that were the numbers 51254. On the Manifold the number 55070 is found and below that the letters SCC. So the correct craft atom could be ordered with a Grays 45 HP, Grays 60 HP, Grays 75 HP and Grays Fireball 90HP. I am hoping someone can tell me which motor I have and perhaps what it cross references to if it is a Continental block. THANKS

Steve, Is your carburetor a Zenith or Carter? If it is a Zenith there will be another disc like seen on the side of the flame arrestor. What are the numbers on it? |

Thanks Jim for chiming in. I won't be able to get to the motor for a bit. But here are some close up pics of the carb - don't know if that will help. In the last picture it is pretty clear the fuel pump is a Carter, still not sure on the carb...

It's a Carter carburetor. I don't have books for them. Sorry |

Yep definitely a Carter, I can not read the number, will have to have some serious cleaning but could be 88-1, 38-1, 8S-1, 3S-1 maybe even 33-1. Does the type of Carb help identify which model engine this is?

Being a Gray, it is a Continental engine. The numbers on the block should help cross reference it to the continental engine. I don't think the numbers on the manifold will tell you much of anything. |

Steve, It's a BB-1. Don't know if the brand matters. I have a Zenith book that tells by number what engine every carburetor was originally sold for. Thought we could ID it that way. |

Jim - got it, that would have been a good idea... Ned - so which numbers from the block do I want to look at... I found; "F4120" w/ date code "4-7-54", and then I found "F400A" and I believe "F400A4". Interestingly enough I found all kinds of references online to F140 (F162, Y112, etc) but nothing references the numbers on this block... |

According to this chart 45 and 60hp are the only 4 cylinder they put a BB-1 on. 45 is pretty small. Bet yours is the 60HP.

Good info - THANKS! I hope it is the 60 HP version too. I would guess there must be a difference in either bore size or stroke to go from a 45 HP to 60 HP motor, especially if they are using the same carbs. More stuff to research. Thanks again! |

Sorry to say I don't know which number it would be or where it is. I can say that on the "109" (225 CID six cylinder) the number is down right near the 'flange' of the block, where the oil pan bolts on (I'm remembering on the opposite side from the manifold , toward the aft end maybe??) I hope this helps. The Carter BB1 carburetor is also used on the "109", so it is a pretty good size carb. |
