The earlier Chip/Leighton-Wainwright boats (prior 1908)were built by Leyere (On the St Lawrence River at Ogdensburg) I see no record of Chip III's builder but Leyere is a safe bet. Chip is short for Chippewa related to Chippewa Bay and the Chippewa bay Yacht Club. Chip III was powered by two six cylinder Leighton built two stroke engines of a reported two hundred hp each!! The boat's owner was a Senator Hawkins and was not successful due to engine cooling troubles. References: Engines Afloat by Stan Grayson and Speedboat by Dan Fostle
