I have a new exhaust manifold for the 292 chevy six and a new Osco exhaust elbow # 8068. It is looking for a new owner. Does anyone know what kind of boats this engine would have been used in? Thank you Don |

I have a 292 chevy marine engine,it's a staight 6.I need to know what rpm they usually turn and the horsepower.I need to change the prop on my boat and the guy needs to know that info.Could anyone help me pls  ))) |

The 292 was the bigger truck engine. The 250 6cyl was rated around 4000-4400 Rpm in the 165 hp mercruiser sterndrives. I would not think it should go much over 4000 rpm. After I rebuilt, balanced and stuck four barrels on a pair I was turning 4800-5000 and started breaking valve springs. These are torquey engines, not high revers |

They are readily available. My retail price is $620.00. I don't think there are any aftermarket being made any more. |

What type of carburetor is used on a marine chevy 292 straight 6? That's all I need to get my boat running, but have no idea what kind to get. Thanks for the help! |

You need to look at the manifold you have. Is it a two barrel or a four barrel mount? The 292 manifold as well as the later 250 manifolds had the ability to use either. The 250's used an insert to make it a two barrel. The 292 (200 hp) usually on a houseboat, came with a quadra-jet. Two large and two small. Today you can use almost any four barrel with the adapter mounts that are available. You just have to create your own throttle linkage. (not difficult).
I used a 600 vacuum secondary Holley. It was a little large but cheap. A 450-500 spread bore would probably match better. Hope this helps. If it is a 2 barrel ,it is a rochester. |

Are you looking to replace an existing engine or build a new one? Twins? If they were 165 hp, they were 250 ci. I bored 30, balanced, 4 barrel and thru transom. Ended up around 200hp each. Ran out around 58 mph on aluminum wheels on a 23 formula. |

Wow this thread brings back many memories of Miami
in its heyday of fast ocean boats !
Bought a 23" formula in 1968 with the twin six
Mercruiser inboard/outboard. The boat was made for one purpose - GO-FAST-. Leaving port of Miami
at the outer marker on a nice day full cruise would have you in the channel at South Bimini, Bahamas in about an hour. In my opinion the boat had to much stern weight and had two stable speeds
full idle or full power ??
The Cigarett designed by the same people was a later boat, a bigger hull and better sea keeping qualities with these engines.
This article is about those days 1960's thru 80's
I knew Don Aronow and couldn't vist powerboat row enough then, magnificent hulls, rows of the biggest most powerful inboard marine engines in crates awaiting installation, the drug runners haven. Like the Moonshiners and their hopped up cars and boats some decades earlier this was a new chapter in design and SPEED !
The Good Old Days-- Maybe not.

Thanks for the article. I was wondering what happened. I was a wide eyed 21 year old wandering around Thunder Boat road like you said. Mine was a 1974 insurance boat that I rebuilt sunk engines and had a lot of fun with. |
