Before hydraulics became common in small fishing boats, Monterey Clipper skippers could use a chain drive off the prop shaft, running through an old car transmission and some right angle gearboxes to drive the trolling "gurdies". Anyone recognize the 3-way and 90 gearboxes in this 1950's image? The 90 units seem to have levers to disengage the drive.

The 90 boxes are obviously cast brass or bronze from the verdigris colour, so probably made up by the same outfits that made the gurdies. The other trans looks like it might be from a small tractor or some other application where the shaft that drives the gurdies would have been the rear axle? |
