Unknown Marine Engines
As many here know I have worked at listing as many
North American Marine engine manufacturers from 1940 back to the earliest marine gas engines made.
The total in my Data base as of today is 2070.
Along with these listings many engines have gone into a separate file "Unknown Marine Engines" the total today is 157 or about 7% and slowly growing !
I would like to start a thread here and post the photos of these engines,(many have been posted here and or belong to many on this site, several are from emails and other sources) a few each week and hopefully a knowledgeable eye will see something that reminds them of an engine with similar traits etc. I probably have the manufacturers name already listed but cannot find the evidence to accurately put a makers name to these engines ?
Any input will be appreciated !

I am pretty sure this was made by the "Pointy Head Machine Company".
Any ways, that is what I am going to put on the reproduction tag I get made. |

Bill, This engine is on my unknown list, your photos are better Thanks for posting.
The 6 bolt rectangular intake plate is an original design of Harry Baird about 1909 and was mfgrd by many companies under many names & variances ( Baird, St Claire, Yale,Little Skipper, Skiddo, Little Hummer,Belle Isle etc).
You have one of the nicest St Claire engines put it beside this one and look at the intake plate and get back to us ?
If I had to name it whithout really knowing its history I would name it "BAIRD".

Thanks, I had not really thought of the intake plate as being the same design. Both these engines came from the same collector from Northern Michigan. I hauled these back from the Portland, Indiana swap meet back in 2004, along with another unknown, possible a Pierce. That was a great swap, there were dozens of marine engines for sale, but I had very little cash.

Bill, post photos of engine you think is a Pierce, maybe we can ID it a little closer!
what Is the vise in the trailer ? I collect vises
like the big ones !

and, for some reason, I keep buying these.

I'm pretty sure the engine is not a Pierce ?
what a very cool old marine engine, the vertically split crankcase is a unique design, I have 19 names in my engine list with vertical split-None of them match this engine ? the other very unique design trait is the fuel intake in the aft of the crankcase ? frustrating that I can't put a name on this engine right now after a few hours of searching ?
So one more for the "UNKNOWN FILES "

I appreciate the vise photos.
A few that keep company with my old marine engines.
This one is old, 6 inch wide jaw about 175 lbs
Probably not one of us that rebuild old engines that doesn't use a vise ??

I bought it off ebay in 2004. I was told there were two similar engines (same company) at an auction, one with name tag, and this one. The one with name tag I was told was a Pierce, and it went for twice the money as mine. The seller was a very experienced engine collector. It came from Southern Michigan.

Looks like we need a "Tools" section Andrew. We could pretend it's just for tools needed to restore old marine engines!  |
